What a fantastic second Sunday racing day at IYC this Sunday the 11th 🌊⛵

Word of the day - smiles (all round)

We had 16 boats on the water with a brilliant mix of sailors and classes from juniors to seniors and from Extras to Lasers, Terras, Picos, a Mirrors and a 420. It was great to see such a wide spread of boats and experience levels all sharing the same water.

The wind started off polite and well mannered and then decided it was time to dial up the fun. As the breeze picked up we saw a few enthusiastic barrel rolls, some dramatic death spirals while on a run, but mostly plenty of smiles. A couple of boats needed a helping hand back to safety which only added to the stories for the clubhouse afterwards.

What was especially lovely to watch was the fleet naturally splitting into three groups. A competitive front pack with the Extras and Lasers, a busy mid fleet with more lasers and a Mirror! Then a determined group working their way through at the back. It felt like three races happening at once and made for great sailing across the board.

The juniors deserve a special mention. The early races were a real test in the conditions but by the fourth race confidence had kicked in and they were finding their groove and properly mixing it with the rest of the fleet. Watching that progression is always one of the best parts of race day.

We also had some guest sailors from other yacht clubs which is always a pleasure. It was also great to see a gallery of friends and family watching the action from the club lawns. Sharing the water facilities and a love for sailing with the wider Cape Town sailing community is what it is all about.

Also a few new maintenance items in the boat park but wear and tear are part of the package.

All in all a great day on the water with good racing good learning and just the right amount of drama to keep things interesting, only one boat retiring despite the strong wind! Looking forward to the next one.

*A Family’s Adventure across the Atlantic – the Journey of the “Roman Rock”* ⛵️🌊💨☀️

In March 2024, aboard their 40-foot yacht "Roman Rock," the family of four Van Wyk’s, embarked on an extraordinary sailing adventure from Cape Town to Brazil, charting a course across the vast Atlantic via St. Helena. This isn’t just a trip; it’s a family's dream unfolding on the high seas, with no crew but themselves - parents and two children, all in for the ride of their lives.

From their departure on March 11, the family faced the sea's moods, from tepid winds that barely filled their sails to gusts that propelled them forward. The early days brought seasickness, which was quickly conquered, allowing them to settle into life at sea. It was a life filled with learning and adaptation, where movie nights for the kids and navigating under starlit skies for the adults became the new normal.

Their journey was punctuated with moments of anxiety, excitement and serenity. A surprise encounter with a tanker named "Winner" so far but yet so close on the open seas, brought a moment of anxiety. While their wind pilot, affectionately named “Pippa”, became an indispensable member of the crew. From the technological marvels that kept them safe to the simple joy of making 75 Liters of drinking water, every few days was a blend of challenges and triumphs.

The voyage is as much about sailing, as it is about family bonding. Celebrating halfway to their destination with homemade flapjacks, managing homeschooling aboard, and sharing stories, the family forged their way across the Atlantic. Seasickness remedies and nightly rituals underscored their shared experience and determination to embrace the journey, warts and all.

As they neared St. Helena, their anticipation grew, likened to the eagerness of Christmas Eve. Upon arrival on the 26th of March, they celebrated not just a waypoint but the journey's lessons, the resilience they discovered, and the dreams they were living.

The first leg of their trip now having taken them roughly 1,800 Nautical Miles (3,300 Kilometres) from Simons Town to St. Helena, they will now embark on the second leg of their trip which sees them sail another roughly 2,200 Nautical Miles (4,000 Kilometres) from St. Helena to the port of Vitoria, north of Rio de Janeiro. With plans to leave "Roman Rock" in Brazil for a future return and a new sailing voyage. This trip is more than just sailing; it’s a family's adventure into the unknown - together.

The family, also sailors at the IYC, send periodic updates of their adventure across the Atlantic, making the vast ocean a little smaller and their adventure a shared experience.

Let’s wish them well with calm seas and fair winds as they start the second leg of this wonderful adventure!
