It takes an amazing Dad to support his children, it takes an extraordinary Dad to support a child with differentiated needs!

Working as Remedial Therapists, trying to build certain, missing building blocks in academics and also assisting learners with diagnoses, we do not often see the higher marks. What we do see are all the extra hours in therapy, the dedication of learners and parents trying to keep up with their curriculum's demands. We are so proud of each family dedicating time and money to assist their kiddos.

Our Learning Room does not see a diagnoses as an inability, but rather as an amazing insight into how each learner's brain operates. If we know how our learners function, then we can support better!

Teaching isn’t just about what you say.

It’s about when the brain can use it.

There’s a window where learning actually happens.

When a child is regulated enough to:
– take in information
– reflect on what happened
– connect cause and effect

But outside that window, the system shifts.

Too far into overwhelm and the brain prioritises survival:
→ reasoning doesn’t land
→ consequences don’t teach
→ skills aren’t accessible
Too far the other way (tired, disengaged), and it doesn’t stick either.

This is why the same conversation can work one day… and completely fail the next.

It’s not inconsistency.
It’s state-dependent learning.

When we miss the window, we often escalate the strategy
(“stronger consequence”, “more explaining”)

But the leverage point isn’t intensity.

It’s timing.
Support the nervous system first.
Then teach.

If you’ve been wondering why things should be working but aren’t—this is usually the missing piece.

I break this down step-by-step in Guidance from The Therapist Parent (link in bio).

Homework creates a routine, a routine creates a habit, a habit later assists in preparing for study routines!
