The CIA is Wrong: It Doesn’t Take 1,000 Hours to Learn a Language

So, how long does it take to learn a language?

http://fb.me/msg/capeenglishtravel

Don’t get me wrong. Learning a language requires dedication, focus and commitment. Whichever method you choose to learn a language, it will take hundreds of hours to reach fluency.

Our research indicates that it takes between 480 hours to reach intermediate fluency and 720 hours for more advanced levels or unfamiliar languages. Big difference!

In this article, we will look at the fastest, most ambitious way to learn a language from scratch.

Is ten hours a day reasonable to learn a language? It could be. In order not to burn out, it is important to vary the activities.

At 10 hours per day of language practice, intermediate fluency should take 48 days, and for difficult languages or advanced levels 72 days. If we spend five hours a day, it will take twice as long.

Here is a sample 10-hour day:

8-12: Alternate listening, reading and vocabulary review.
12-2: Rest, exercise, lunch, while listening to the language.
2-3: Grammar review.
3-4: Write an essay, letter, review or even if you feel inspired some poetry.
4-5: Talk to an online tutor to monitor progress and assist with the plan at Cape English Travel.
5-7: Rest, go to the gym or chill out on the sofa.
7-8: Relaxation in the language, movies, songs, or going out with friends who speak the language.

I have no doubt that someone following this intense program, or something similar, would achieve conversational fluency in two months for easy languages, and three months for difficult languages.

Did you notice the low number of hours spent with a tutor? Only one hour a day!

What makes Cape Town the world’s most desirable city?

For the seventh year running Cape Town has been voted the best city in the world by more than 39 000 readers of The Telegraph who took part in the 2019 Telegraph Travel Awards.

Cape Town has been described as “a coastal gem, lying in the shadow of a cloud-hugged mountain” where “wine flows, penguins waddle and – not too far away – majestic beasts roam”.

The Mother City has retained its position despite major shifts in the top 20, such as Kyoto, a brand new entrant, ranking third.
