This great article covers many of the boxes we ticked while working with our Questlings (Quest Model Bilingual School) a few years back. One way to transform Deaf Literacy standards in our Schools for the Deaf in South Africa would be by following their example but substituting SASL and Cued English for their Spanish and English.

Great role model...
She,
In the dark,
Found light
Brighter than many ever see.
She,
Within herself,
Found loveliness,
Through the soul's own mastery.
And now the world receives
From her dower:
The message of the strength
Of inner power.
By Langston Hughes
• Helen Keller (1880-1968) was an American author. She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and at the age of 19 months, she became ill with an unknown illness that left her blind, deaf, and unable to speak. Despite these challenges, Keller learned to communicate and went on to become a prolific writer and public speaker, advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and other social and political causes. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, and her autobiography, "The Story of My Life," has become a classic in American literature.

Way to go. We need to be doing something similar to this in South Africa in 2024. Two terms I love and can identify with are 'Manual Bilingualism' in SA would be SASL and Cued English, the other is that it is seen as a 'movement' rather than a 'method'.
📅 Mark your calendars! The 2024 CueSign Camp is coming to Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. between Sunday, July 7, and Thursday, July 11, 2024.
We're gathering to celebrate and promote the cause of manual bilingualism, which is not just a method; it's a movement. It's pivotal to ending language deprivation in D/deaf and hard-of-hearing children and empowering them to engage fully with their environment. By championing both Cued American English (the American English form of Cued Speech) and American Sign Language, we ensure that every child has their human right to literacy and a sense of belonging in a vibrant community and culture.
We'll have presentations, classes, and opportunities for people of all ages to socialize. Whether you're a parent, a professional, a member of the D/deaf and hard-of-hearing community, an ally, or someone interested in learning more, you'll find a place here!
We also have opportunities for people to pay it forward. We're searching for dedicated volunteers to provide programming for children aged 5-12. To show our gratitude, volunteers will receive complimentary registration to the camp! If you're interested in volunteering, please contact the 2024 CueSign Camp Director, Angela Kuhn, at [email protected].
Finally, please consider donating to CueSign, Inc. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on your generous donations to make this camp possible. Your contribution will help us cover the costs of the event and support our mission of promoting manual bilingualism everywhere. Donate today to invest in the future of Deaf and hard-of-hearing children! https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=K69CY42DQFQZJ

Ditto for South Africa. Bilingualism ( SASL, and Cued English), is the way to go... Tried and tested in a Wits Centre for Deaf Studies 3-year pilot program (2017 -2019) with amazing results.
Dr. R. Orin Cornett, the genius behind Cued Speech, said it first! No more crossing fingers and hoping for the 'lucky ones.' Cued American English and American Sign Language both open a world of communication possibilities, relieving parents from the pressure of choosing based on chance. Every child deserves a voice, and by providing visual access to language, you can make that happen!
