Alan Tours always strives to give our guests the best possible experiences while touring with us.

This wouldn't be possible if it weren't for our friendly and knowledgeable guides who show people around many of the most sought-after places in South Africa.

Meet Anthony, a passionate, understanding and humourous guide with a strong zoology background. He started his tour guiding career in 2022 and fell in love with it!

We have asked him some questions:

❓What kind of person does it take to excel as a guide?
✅A guide needs to have a real passion for conducting tours and be able to connect with people.

❓What experience in your career thus far will you never forget?
✅When I was studying, I had the privilege to assist with a sea turtle research project. Our research was conducted at night with no light so as not to disturb the turtles. While walking with my friends, I pointed out a large piece of driftwood sticking out in the sand and warned everyone not to trip. Then, my foot caught that very piece of wood and I promptly pivoted forward and landed with my face in the sand! Thereafter, we passed that same piece of wood every night and I was ever so kindly warned by my friends not to trip over it (again).

❓What do you like most about your job as a guide?
✅The chance to get out into the open spaces to show off and educate guests about our wonderful fauna and flora as well as our beautiful country!

❓What is your favourite travel destination and why?
✅The Kruger National Park. My experience there was amazing. With the vast open spaces, fantastic wildlife sightings and stunning scenery, I couldn't stop smiling.

❓Why do you have a passion for this industry?
✅Nature and wildlife was always a passion of mine and tour guiding gives me the opportunity to share that passion with others. It opens doors for education and conversation. Not only do I share my knowledge but I also gain knowledge through conversations with my guests.

Pearl-Spotted Owlet (Glaucidium perlatum) in Satara Rest Camp, Kruger National Park.
What a sighting with Alan Tours! It was surprisingly well camouflaged among the branches with only a slight movement giving it away.

Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus)
One of my all time favourite animals to see! I can never get bored of seeing the world's largest reptile, which is a good thing since we came across so many!! Big, small and everything inbetween. All were basking and taking in the warmth from the sun's rays. One was a little camera shy haha

Honey Badger (Mellivora capensis)
Getting an opportunity to see what is likely Africa's toughest and most fearless animal was truly fantastic. In fact I managed to see two!!! The first xcame out of the tall grass and crossed the road a few hundred metres in front of us and later that day one was walking right next to the road on a small slope!! Both were just taking it easy looking for their next meal. Which could include a deadly snake. I did not see there ' the best defence is offence' strategy but it leaves something to return and look forawrd to!

Black-Backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas)
Who doesn't want to see pictures of cute puppies? And black-backed jackal pups definitely fit the bill. We came across them right outisde the gate of Satara Rest Camp in Kruger National Park. It was amazing to see how each pup had it's own personality already. One pup in particular only listened to mom if she was right there next to them. Otherwise they were on a completely different mission from their siblings.
