A day of reflection, reverence, and reminiscing...

In celebration of 100 years of Waldorf Early childhood, we recently gathered as a school to honour the legacy of our own ECD at Michael Mount. We heard of the history of our school, some students shared special memories, and we were fortunate enough to be joined by some honoured guests - past teachers and assistants who played significant roles in the in the story of Michael Mount's Early Childhood over the years.

Together with our current ECD teachers, they visited our newly renovated classrooms and blessed the gardens with a verse and by sprinkling seeds that we received from Dornach when one of our teachers was there for the World Conference earlier this year. Thereafter, memories and laughter were shared at the Bryanston Market, where they were treated to a special tea in their honour.

We were also reminded of the many other individuals who have left their mark on our ECD over the years, who were unable to join us for this day.

𝘉𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘺-𝘎 𝘏𝘢𝘶𝘱𝘵𝘭𝘦, 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘧 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢

It was an enormous privilege to be part of the organising group for the World Early Childhood Conference and to contribute to the rich, thoughtful and inspiring programme that unfolded over the course of the gathering.

The conference marked the centenary of Waldorf early childhood education and brought together colleagues from around the world in a spirit of celebration, gratitude and renewed commitment. It offered an opportunity to honour the pioneers whose vision, courage and dedication laid the foundations of the worldwide Waldorf early childhood movement. At the same time, it invited us to look honestly at the challenges and responsibilities facing us today, asking how we can continue to protect childhood while responding creatively and responsibly to the needs of our changing world.

At last week’s High School assembly, we honoured our Matric SRC members who have filled these roles for the 2025-26 year.

Together, they have contributed to reimagining the school dress code, responding to students’ needs, promoting school spirit at sporting events, and representing the school with pride. They have implemented a second-hand textbook sale within the school, establishing the groundwork for years to come. They have arranged a community blood drive for the school and the Bryanston Market, which will take place shortly.

We welcome our new representatives for 2026-27. They are guided by the belief that a strong school community is built on Respect, Empathy, Support, Participation, Excellence, Collaboration and Trust. Their goal is to leave a lasting mark of positivity and unity for a school where everyone feels that they belong, every voice matters, and every individual has the opportunity to contribute to the school in a constructive manner.

𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗢𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘬𝘢 𝘒𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘬𝘦𝘯, 𝘔𝘔𝘞𝘚 𝘈𝘭𝘶𝘮

With all that AI can do, we are left to ask, ‘What will we do? What purpose will we serve? What are we good for?’

We have to start rejecting the idea that we are all replaceable. There is something fundamental that we can do that AI cannot. AI will take over all the monotonous tasks and we will be left with making the work that requires some soul and real critical thinking. We might go from an economy of quantity to one of quality.

𝗔𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗶 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗔𝗻𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗸𝗮 𝗞𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗸𝗲𝗻 - 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰

"I completed my BA in Fine Arts Honours at the University of Pretoria, and my thesis was written alongside the design and construction of OASIS, that year's Temple artwork at AfrikaBurn.

Since graduating, I have been working as a full-time professional artist. My work has been exhibited throughout South Africa and internationally, including exhibitions such as the Florence Biennale and the Venice Art Fair. I have been fortunate to build a community of collectors around the world, allowing me to pursue art as both a vocation and a business. One of my most exciting recent projects has been co-founding Gallery on 5th in Parkhurst with a collective of close friends.

At school, I was fortunate enough to win several school art competitions, including designing the Big Walk logo in Classes 1 and 7. Those moments and many more like it gave me confidence that my creativity had value and deserved to be nurtured.

There is something unique about the friendships formed at Michael Mount. Even after years apart, we seem to reconnect as though no time has passed. There is a sense of belonging and care that feels more like family than friendship, and I treasure that deeply.

To me, being a Waldorf alum means belonging to a community of people who are encouraged to think independently, value creativity and approach the world with curiosity. We are often comfortable taking unconventional paths and expressing ourselves authentically.

There is also a deep appreciation for our shared humanity and our spiritual nature. We support one another, celebrate one another's individuality and carry forward the understanding that imagination, compassion and creativity are not extras in life, but essential ways of engaging with the world."

Our Class 11s recently enjoyed a Career Day – we welcomed parents in different fields and industries to present their experiences in the workplace, to give our students a better sense of what the world of work is like. They were exposed to the fields of medicine, fine arts, law, AI, film and television, actuarial science, and marketing and content creation – to name a few. They also had the opportunity to network with our parents and learn more about what interests them. A big thank you to all the parents who generously offered their time and expertise to this worthwhile event – and thank you to the teachers who arranged it.

Last week, our Class 11 students gave their final eurythmy performance. It was a beautiful evening of movement, music and verse, approached with reverence and grace 💫

Eurythmy is an integral part of Waldorf education. It brings music and language to life through movement. It cultivates presence, coordination, listening, and connection, which supports the development of well-rounded human beings.

𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘔𝘴 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘯 𝘞𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘮 𝘈𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 3 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳

In the 9th year of a child’s life, they go through a change. In the Waldorf school, we call this the Rubicon year. It is the first time the child sees themselves as separate from the world. They start to see themselves as ‘I am here’ and ‘the world is there’. This is the second birthing of the ‘I’. The first occurs around the age of 3, when the child can express themselves as ‘I’ for the first time. This time it is the birthing of their self-awareness.

The Class 3 Waldorf curriculum meets these children in this developmental phase to help them in the unfolding of this incredible change they are experiencing. It seeks to provide these children with a sort of orientation, using tools that will help them through this time. The 9-year-old starts to see that they will have to make their own way in the world. This task, with the self-awareness and loneliness of being just 9 years old, is an overwhelming experience for this child. However, when they realise that they have the capacities and the tools to make their way, they realise the task is less daunting and they are more capable than they realise.

In Life Science, our Class 9 students recently took part in an eye dissection, exploring the fascinating structure and function of one of our most remarkable sense organs. Through hands-on investigation, they identified key parts of the eye and gained a deeper appreciation of how its intricate design allows us to perceive the world around us. The practical experience encouraged curiosity, scientific thinking, and respect for the complexity of the human body 🌱
