UJ Academy Maths, Science & ICT School of Specialisation

UJ Academy Maths, Science & ICT School of Specialisation UJ Academy was launched as a Maths, Science & ICT School of Specialisation with a focus on High-Tech & Innovation on 30 August 2019

UJ Academy is the high school of the University of Johannesburg. Our school was started in 1992 by the then Rand Afrikaans University in an effort to help learners from previously disadvantaged communities with an aptitude in mathematics and science to get a good educational background to prepare them for tertiary education. Since 1994 Metropolitan has joined hands with RAU in this project and is

still involved. Our school was previously known as Metropolitan Raucall. Our school still focusses on disadvantaged learners with an aptitude for number subjects. There are currently just over 500 learners in the school, with ninety five matriculants this year. Since our first matric group in 1996, we have had a 99.8% pass rate and 80% university exemption rate on average. The 2014 group achieved a 100% pass rate, 94,4% Bachelors and 5,6% Diplomas. The success of our school can be attributed to various factors. Our sponsors as well as the education department provide a lot of support. The educators are dedicated, hardworking and knowledgeable in their respective fields. Our school governing body is involved in all matters related to the school. The majority of parents give their full co-operation. The learners are well-disciplined and focused on their academic achievements. Our school has a choir which performs regularly. Learners also take part in a variety of Olympiads and other competitions. There are also opportunities to take part in debating, chess, handball and soccer. Metropolitan entered the school in an international competition as its corporate social investment project. The school won the prize for Africa and Asia. The prize giving ceremony was held during September in Ireland in 2008. Our school was amongst the top ten public schools in the country according to the Sunday Times survey during October 2009. Metropolitan Raucall was also the Top Mathematics School and was rated in fourth position as Top Science School that year. At a gala event jointly hosted by the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Basic Education on 4 May 2010, Metropolitan Raucall received the award for the Top Mathematics & Science School in Gauteng. Our school constantly features under the top schools in the district. The school celebrated its 20th birthday in 2012. The name was then officially changed from Raucall to UJ Metropolitan Academy.
