🚨 Water Hyacinth Can Be Controlled – Here Is the Proof BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP 🚨

The two photos attached to this post tell an important story.

They show the difference that continuous water hyacinth removal can make.

📍 Photo 1 - WITHOUT CONTINUOUS REMOVAL: Sterkstroom side of Roodekoppies Dam, where large areas are currently covered by water hyacinth.

📍 Photo 2 - WITH CONTINUOUS REMOVAL: Current situation at Dennekruin. Almost no hiyacinths. Crocodile River side, photographed today after years of continuous removal.

The difference is not luck. It is the result of removing water hyacinth every single day, seven days a week.

We have been removing hiyacinth for more than 26 years. During this time, we have invested more than R8 million of our own money into labour, fuel and equipment. We receive no government funding for this work and we do this because we believe Roodekopjes Dam is worth protecting for anglers, boaters, holidaymakers, local businesses and future generations.

It is also important to understand that water hyacinth cannot simply be sprayed and left. While herbicides can help control its growth, the dead plants still have to be physically removed from the water. If they are left to decompose in the dam, they reduce oxygen levels, affect water quality and continue to impact the health of the ecosystem. Long-term success requires both control and continuous removal.

Unfortunately, the issue has now grown beyond what a few property owners can manage alone. If the large hyacinth infestations on the Sterkstroom side are left unchecked, they could have a serious negative impact on the overall health of Roodekoppies Dam, and threatens the long-term sustainability of angling, that so many of us were privileged to enjoy ♡

By standing together as a community, we have a real opportunity to support the angling resorts and property owners on the Sterkstroom side in bringing the hyacinth under control before it escalates further. If we combine our resources, equipment, time, and expertise, we can make a meaningful and lasting difference for the entire Roodekoppies Dam.

This is not a post to criticise or blame anyone. It is a sincere call for the community to unite and work together to protect one of our region's most valuable natural resources.
