Someone once asked me, “What advice would you give a child care provider?”

Without hesitation, I said this:

Know your worth.

Every single day, parents hand you the most important thing in their entire world. There is nothing more precious than their child. Nothing.

I know because that’s why I started child care. I wanted to be home with my own children while still earning an income. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust anyone else. I simply wanted to be the one raising them.

So when a parent places their baby in your arms, understand what that really means. They are giving you one of the greatest gifts anyone can give: their trust.

Never take that lightly.

We don’t get paid what we’re worth. The job isn’t glamorous. Most people don’t grow up dreaming of becoming a child care provider.

But our work is essential.

If child care disappeared tomorrow, businesses couldn’t open. Hospitals would struggle to staff their shifts. Factories would slow down. Parents couldn’t go to work because they wouldn’t have anyone they trust to care for their children.

Child care isn’t just important.

It helps keep our entire country moving.

I know this job can feel lonely. I know it’s exhausting. I know there are days when you wonder if anyone truly sees everything you do.

I do.

And I hope today you’ll remember this:

You are making it possible for parents to provide for their families while knowing their children are safe, loved, and cared for.

That makes you far more valuable than you probably give yourself credit for.
