These teachers are spending time going over their children's work one-on-one instead of just giving them a grade... and it's making a difference! Proof that children thrive from individual attention.
Step-A-Head Extra Maths Lessons
I have a passion to see young people realize their potential using numeracy as a tool. Grades 4-11. South African's education system is in crisis.
I regularly witness evidence of this with skill levels in numeracy and literacy that continue to fall by the year. We use a holistic approach, which entails more than just bombarding a child with a whole lot of information and hoping that something sticks. The lessons are one on one and completely interactive. This allows the child to reinforce and become confident about their own learning techniques and increasing skill set. Maths can be enjoyable (or at least tolerable) if taught correctly!

A Surprising Way to Reduce Math Stress
Eight in 10 teenagers identify school as a primary source of stress, and one in 10 say they’ve received lower grades because of stress. When it comes to math, the problem may be worse—many students experience math anxiety, low self-confidence, or overwhelming amounts of academic pressure, which can disrupt learning, leading to lower grades and test scores. Teachers try out a lot of ideas to reduce math stress, and here’s a surprising one. via Maths Insider

Under challenge: Girls' confidence level, not math ability hinders path to science degrees - Florida State University News When it comes to mathematics, girls rate their abilities markedly lower than boys, even when there is no observable difference between the two, according to Florida State University researchers. “The argument continues to be made that gender differences in the ‘hard’ sciences is all about ability,”…

'The power of curiosity to contribute not only to high achievement, but also to a fulfilling existence, cannot be emphasized enough. Curiosity can be defined as “the recognition, pursuit, and intense desire to explore, novel, challenging, and uncertain events”. In recent years, curiosity has been linked to happiness, creativity, satisfying intimate relationships, increased personal growth after traumatic experiences, and increased meaning in life. In the school context, conceptualized as a “character strength,” curiosity has also received heightened research attention. Having a “hungry mind” has been shown to be a core determinant of academic achievement, rivaling the prediction power of IQ.'
Schools Are Missing What Matters About Learning Research shows that curiosity isn't just a means to an end: It's a type of ability in its own right.

'Previously, what were labeled as behavioral and learning-related issues, such as non-compliance, learning disabilities, depression, oppositional disorder and even Attention Deficit Disorder, are undergoing a reexamination as the understanding of the effects of traumatic stress on a child's brain grows.
"The over-activity of fear centers affect the limbic system, which is constantly aroused in a fight or flight freeze, or in a fearscape," says Connie Black-Pond, Clinical Director and Co-Founder of the Childhood Trauma Assessment Center at Western Michigan University, established in 2000 as one of the first trauma assessment centers in the state. "The results might be a child who exhibits behavioral issues or a child who is shut down, depressed, emotionally numb, or disassociated."' via Highway Area Children's Assessment & Therapy Team
Recognition grows that children's behavior problems may be trauma related Understanding how trauma hurts children is the first step in rebuilding the trust it takes to heal them.
