The Undertaker

This is for the Undertaker,
Whose story is sad to tell.
For what they do is never mentioned,
And often overlooked as well.

They’re not at all what you might picture,
They’re not wrinkled, old and grey.
Their hearts are kind, their hands are steady,
They walk with you on life’s hardest day.

Some people laugh and make their jokes,
And some turn up their nose,
And many think that they are strange,
For the life they chose.

But there are many things that they don’t see,
And even more that they don’t know.
Like all the nights they lose their rest,
So that others can let go.

They work with care both day and night,
With no time to eat or sleep.
To care for those in mourning,
And comfort those who weep.

The load they carry on their shoulders,
Is more than you or I could bear.
But they always find the strength and time,
To show you that they care.

So when you see the undertakers,
Make sure you see the team,
That does the work that no one wants,
And lives the values most would deem.

Take the time to thank them kindly,
And a moment to just say “hi”,
You’ll find they’re more than just undertakers,
They’re people with a heart like you and I.

Ever notice how some rooms just feel 'lighter'? We’ve obsessed over the small details (the plushness of the chairs, the temperature of the air, the placement of the tissues) so you don’t have to. It’s our way of offering a silent hug when words aren't enough.

When someone dies at home, one of the first calls made is to a funeral home's removal team, sometimes called the first-call team. They can be dispatched at any hour, day or night, and they're often the first unfamiliar faces a grieving family sees.

The work is quiet by design. Staff are trained to move calmly, speak softly, and handle every part of the transfer with a kind of practiced respect that doesn't draw attention to itself. It's a strange kind of job, being the person who shows up at 2am to care for someone's father or wife with total strangers watching.

Most people never think about who does this work until the night they need it. 🌙 If you've had a first-call team come to your home, what do you remember most about that moment?

The job doesn't stop at 5pm, and it doesn't wait for a convenient hour either. 🌙

Funeral directors are typically on call around the clock for what's known in the industry as "first call," the moment a death is reported and someone needs to go retrieve the person, whether that's a home, a hospital, or a nursing facility at 3am. It's one of the least visible parts of the job, no ceremony, no family gathered yet, just a quiet drive in the dark and the responsibility of treating a stranger's loved one with the same care as if it were their own family.

Many funeral homes rotate on-call duty among several directors so no one person carries it every night, but someone is always reachable. It's a part of death care that rarely makes it into how people picture the profession, focused as it usually is on services and ceremonies rather than what happens hours or days before any of that begins.

Did you ever think about who actually shows up in the middle of the night when someone dies at home?

When people hear the word hospice, they often picture just a nurse managing pain medication. In reality, Medicare requires hospice care to come from an entire interdisciplinary team, and medical care is only part of what they provide. 🤝

That team includes a physician, a registered nurse, and by requirement, a social worker and a chaplain too. The social worker looks at the whole picture, family stress, financial strain, coping resources, not just the patient's body. The chaplain offers spiritual support that's shaped around whatever the person actually believes, not a one-size-fits-all script. Many hospice programs also bring in trained volunteers and grief counselors for the family, both before and after the death.

It's a fuller kind of care than most people expect, built around the idea that dying well involves more than just managing symptoms. 🕊️

Did you know hospice included this much support, or did it surprise you like it surprises most people?
