Celebrating Creative Thinking in Labour Law
Earlier this year, the Centre for Labour Law at the University of the Free State launched its Creative Methods in Labour Law Competition 2026 under the theme: “Labour Law through Creative Action: Solving Real Problems in South Africa.”
The idea behind the competition was simple: what happens when we challenge our postgraduate students to think beyond the traditional academic paper? Master’s and PhD students were invited to identify a current South African labour-law challenge, consider its legal context, propose a practical solution, and then find a creative and innovative way of communicating that problem and solution.
Today, we are delighted to introduce and congratulate Sabelo Sias Ngxito, one of the two winners of the 2026 competition! Sabelo's entry focused on Bypassing the digital divide: A human-centric, text-based sandbox solution for COIDA enforcement in private households.
Who is Sabelo Sias Ngxito? Sabelo Ngxito is a 22-year-old LLM student at the University of the Free State, specialising in Law of Business Entities. He is a dedicated and aspiring legal professional with a strong academic foundation and a keen interest in the intersection of business, employment relations, labour law and regulatory compliance. He has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, diligence and a high level of commitment to his academic work and other spaces he participates in. Driven by intellectual curiosity, integrity and a strong sense of service, he actively seeks opportunities for professional development, critical dialogue and collaborative problem-solving.
As part of the prize, our two winners will receive sponsored attendance at the Stellenbosch Labour Law Colloquium Stellenbosch University Faculty of Law from 30 September to 2 October 2026. They will also be invited to present their work at the Department of Mercantile Law’s International Annual Mercantile Law Conference, taking place from 11–13 November 2026.
These opportunities are about more than recognising a winning entry. They are about giving emerging researchers the opportunity to enter academic spaces, share their ideas, engage with scholars and practitioners, and see themselves as contributors to the future of labour law scholarship.
At the Centre for Labour Law, we want to continue exploring how creativity, innovation and legal scholarship can come together to address real problems in the world of work.
