Youth Day 2026
Today we honour the courage of the young people of 16 June 1976 whose voices changed the course of South African history.
Their struggle was about more than education. It was about dignity, opportunity, freedom and the right to be heard.
As we commemorate Youth Day, we are reminded that every generation carries a responsibility to build on the sacrifices of those who came before us. The challenges facing young people today may be different, but the call remains the same: to lead with purpose, pursue knowledge, create opportunities and shape a better future for all.
To the youth of South Africa: your ideas matter, your voice matters, and your contribution matters.
Let us honour the legacy of 1976 not only through remembrance, but through action, mentorship, innovation and unity.
“The future is not something we inherit. It is something we build together.”

The decision reflects growing international concern about the role and effectiveness of AI detection technologies, while reinforcing the UFS’ focus on critical thinking, ethical AI literacy, and meaningful student development.
