One of my favourite opening lines comes from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice:

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.“

It sets the tone right out of the gates, and the absurdity of it makes the reader curious to read more.

Why can you live in a "big blue house" but not a "blue big house"?
And why is it completely natural to eat at "the quaint little sandstone restaurant", but you need to be a special kind of silly to eat at "the little sandstone quaint restaurant".

The order of adjectives matters.

The good news? For native English speakers, the order is completely intuitive 😄 You were probably never taught the order at school, but you can hear when it sounds wrong.

For those who are wondering, the correct order is opinion-size-age-shape-colour-origin-matrial-purpose: A quaint little old rectangular brown Dutch sandstone take-away restaurant.
