Our vision is of a Faculty that affirms the dignity of its students, its staff and the community with which it engages, and draws on their diversity as a source of strength. The Faculty of Education was honoured to welcome Prof Agnes Chigona, Head of Research at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), as our keynote speaker. Prof Chigona shared insights from her academic journey, reflecting on the challenges, lessons and experiences that shaped her path as an academic and researcher. Her message encouraged postgraduate students to remain resilient, committed and confident in their scholarly journey.

A powerful reminder to our postgraduate students: โ€œDo not shrink yourself to make others comfortable. Work hard and take your supervisorโ€™s comments positively, not as an attack, but as an opportunity to learn, improve and grow.โ€

Professor Bulelwa Nguza-Mduba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, delivered an inspiring message at the inaugural lecture of Prof Thuthukile Jita, celebrating her appointment to a professorship. She highlighted the significance of the occasion as a milestone in Prof Jitaโ€™s academic journey and as a proud moment for the University of the Free State in recognising the achievements of its academics.

The Faculty of Education at the University of the Free State (UFS), through its Projects & Innovation Office, is proud to be part of an exciting Teacher Professional Development initiative taking place from 28โ€“30 September 2026. The Free State dept of education has partnered with UFS as the service provider for two Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) aimed at supporting approximately 600 teachers across all five districts of the Free State.

The programmes focus on:

Innovative Instructional Techniques for Intermediate Phase Mathematics
Teacher Professional Development for Digital Mobile Learning

This initiative provides an important platform for the University of the Free State to contribute to strengthening teaching and learning across the province, while showcasing the Faculty of Educationโ€™s expertise, innovation and commitment to continuous professional development for teachers. Through initiatives such as these, UFS continues to contribute to quality education and sustainable development and social justice.
