Which self-defense practitioner is truly the most skilled in self‑defense?
A. The senior practitioner who lives in a violent society but has never been the victim of an attack.
B. The senior practitioner who lives in a violent society, has been attacked many times, survived, and carries the scars to prove it.
👉 My take: Pactitioner A. Why? Because real self‑defense isn’t about how many fights you’ve survived. It’s about how many you’ve successfully avoided. Navigating a hostile environment without becoming a victim requires:
Reading pre‑attack indicators
Recognizing dangerous situations early
Paying attention to subtle cues
Using conflict de‑escalation tactics effectively
That’s the mark of a true self‑defense specialist. Survival through prevention is the highest skill.

We invite you to read this article for guidance: https://cobradefence.co.za/how-employers-can-choose-the-right-self-defense-training-provider-for-womens-day-in-south-africa/
It outlines key factors employers should consider when selecting a program that truly protects and empowers their people.
Token Empowerment vs. Real Safety
Too many companies are slotting in 20‑minute “self‑defense” sessions during women’s empowerment events. Photos get posted, hashtags fly, and leadership pats itself on the back. But let’s be clear: this is symbolism, not empowerment.
Self‑defense is not a motivational icebreaker. It’s a life‑saving skillset that requires structured practice, scenario drills, and time commitment. Anything less risks leaving employees with a false sense of security.
Empowerment is not about optics. It’s about impact.

Physical defense tactics are always the last resort when all other prevention and de-escalation tactics have failed. When you have no other option but to use physical tactics, you should employ simple tactics that offers the best chance of survival.
