Learning goes beyond the classroom the School of Accountancy students recently took part in an exciting Amazing Race, combining accounting knowledge, teamwork, problem-solving, communication and professional skills.

The Faculty Debate Series brought students, academics and industry voices together on 21 September to debate whether the faculty teaching models are preparing students for the world of work of the 2030s.

The motion before the house was, "This House Believes That the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences' Teaching Model Is Not Preparing Students Adequately for Employment and the World of Work of the 2030s."

With South Africaโ€™s unemployment challenge and a rapidly changing workplace, the discussion explored an important question: Where does the faculty's responsibility end, and where does the wider economy begin.

Prof Johan Coetzee, Associate Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance at The EMS Faculty, recently served as a judge at the 2026 South African Loyalty Awards in Cape Town, which assess excellence and innovation across customer loyalty, CRM, consumer insights, rewards and data-driven engagement.

The awards recognise some of the countryโ€™s leading loyalty programmes, including FNB eBucks and Shoprite South Africa Checkers Xtra Savings, placing Prof Coetzeeโ€™s expertise alongside organisations operating at the forefront of customer engagement and data-driven business strategy.
