The Odeion School of Music (OSM) at the University of the Free State proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of alumna and mezzo-soprano Karabo Tau, who has been awarded a full scholarship to pursue advanced vocal studies at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas, USA.

A former student in Teresa de Wit's voice studio, Karabo will study under the mentorship of the internationally renowned voice pedagogue, Prof. Barbara Hill Moore, at the Meadows School of the Arts.

Karabo is the first OSM alumna to receive a scholarship of this nature through the partnership between the OSM Voice Department and SMU, marking an important milestone in the growing collaboration between the two institutions.

During her time at OSM, Karabo distinguished herself as a promising young vocal talent. Her achievements include receiving the prestigious OSM Cowley Trust Bursary for Singers, performing as a soloist with the Free State Symphony Orchestra, securing third place in the Musicon Singing Competition, winning the Mezzo-Soprano Category, and making her debut in the title role of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

In 2025, she was selected as one of only five singers nationwide to participate in the International Mozart Festival Masterclass Series presented by Prof. Martin Hundelt of Germany, further affirming her exceptional artistic potential.

Karabo's scholarship represents the latest success story of the SMU-in-South Africa Programme, founded by Prof. Barbara Hill Moore, which has opened international pathways for talented South African musicians while strengthening cultural and educational exchange between South Africa and the United States.

As Karabo embarks on this exciting new chapter, she joins a distinguished group of South African musicians whose careers have been shaped through this unique international partnership.

Congratulations, Karabo! We are immensely proud of your achievement and wish you every success as you continue your artistic journey abroad. Your accomplishment is an inspiration to aspiring young musicians and a powerful testament to the value of talent, dedication, mentorship, and international collaboration.
