CUT strengthens global research standing with €1.74 million EIT innovation project

CUT has reinforced its position as a globally connected university of technology after securing a prestigious European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Higher Education Initiative project valued at approximately €1.74 million. The achievement, led by Prof. Rengith Baby Kuriakose, positions CUT among an elite international consortium of universities and industry partners driving the next generation of deep technology, artificial intelligence (AI), engineering education and research commercialisation.

Awarded under the 2025 EIT Higher Education Initiative Call for Proposals, the AVIAT-STEM (Advanced Hybrid Aviation Propulsion Systems for Deep Tech Excellence and STEM Transformation in Higher Education Institutions) project will accelerate innovation in hybrid aviation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, entrepreneurship and STEM education.

Reflecting on the achievement, Prof Kuriakose said "this achievement is both a personal and professional milestone. While I am honoured to lead the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twin work package, it reflects the collective efforts of my research team and postgraduate students, whose dedication over the years has helped establish CUT's expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0.

CUT student joins elite cohort of South Africa’s emerging leaders through the Abe Bailey Programme

CUT proudly congratulates Juan Oliphant, a third-year Internal Auditing student in the Faculty of Management Sciences, on being selected to participate in the prestigious 2026 Abe Bailey Leadership Development Programme.

As part of the programme, Oliphant will join a select cohort of student leaders from universities across South Africa on an approximately three-week, fully funded leadership development programme in the United Kingdom later this year. The experience will provide participants with opportunities to engage in leadership seminars, educational and cultural excursions, community engagement activities, and meaningful interactions with students, public leaders, and institutions in both South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Oliphant’s selection reflects not only his academic excellence but also his demonstrated leadership ability and commitment to serving others. He currently serves as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Financial Accounting II and has been recognised with the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award. During his first year of study, he was ranked among the top-performing students in the Department of Accounting and Auditing, earning recognition as the department’s third-best first-year student and receiving an invitation to join the Golden Key International Honour Society.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Oliphant is actively involved in community service. He volunteers with Reach for Recovery, the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, and Carter’s Diabetics Edu-Care Centre, where he supports initiatives focused on health awareness, patient care, and community outreach.

CUT will be hosting the 2026 Africa Day Public Lecture, centred on meaningful engagements around sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems.

The lecture will feature guest speaker, Prof. Modreck Gomo from the University of the Free State, whose work and research continue to contribute towards conversations on water sustainability and environmental development across the African continent.

This year’s conversation focuses on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems, highlighting their importance of building a sustainable future for Africa.

CUT’s Dr Valile Dwayi, appointed to National Reference Group on Internationalisation of Higher Education in South Africa

CUT proudly celebrates the appointment of Dr Valile Dwayi, Senior Director: Centre for Global Engagement, to the Department of Higher Education and Training’s prestigious Reference Group tasked with developing the Implementation Strategy for the Policy Framework on the Internationalisation of Higher Education in South Africa.

Driving transformation through internationalisation, Dr Dwayi will serve a three-year term from April 2026 to March 2029, contributing national-level expertise to strengthen equitable and socially just internationalisation across the higher education sector.

Reflecting on his appointment, he noted: “The persistent gap between policy formulation and effective implementation remains a critical challenge for South Africa’s transformation agenda. As a scholar grounded in critical realism, I see the realisation of policy intent as dependent on identifying systemic blockages, particularly in institutional values, and enabling agency to navigate them.”

As a national contributor with a distinct African perspective and a strong Universities of Technology voice, Dr Dwayi positions internationalisation as a catalyst for academic quality, embedding global engagement within science, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. His recent scholarship interrogates colonial legacies, advances equitable global north–south partnerships, and champions the reclamation of African academic voice and leadership.
