EMILY HOBHOUSE

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of Emily Hobouse and visitors to the Eunice Library can step back in time with the latest display honouring this fearless British humanitarian, anti-war activist and pacifist.

Emily had a passion for nursing and education and even sponsored some ladies to attend Eunice, known as the Dames Instituut in those days.

She passed away in London on 8 June 1926, exactly 100 years ago. Following her death, her ashes were buried at the foot of the National Women's Monument on 27 October 1926 during a state funeral attended by 20,000 mourners, including Eunice ladies.

Here is a video message to Eunice from Elsabé Brits for those who have developed an interest in Emily Hobhouse and her life. She takes viewers on a brief tour of Emily's childhood home, a Victorian rectory in the small village of St Ive, near Liskeard in Cornwall, UK.

Elsabé is the organiser of the Emily 100 Event, which will take place on 31 October 2026. She is also an award-winning journalist, the biographer of Emily Hobhouse, and a consultant and curator at the Emily Hobhouse Museum, "The Story of Emily", in Cornwall.

Thank you to Ms Sonnekus and our Library Monitors for the beautiful display and special thanks to Elsabé Brits.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: ALUMNI DINNER

Eunice translates to "Happy Victory" and we are still celebrating the happy memories that were made at the recent Birthday weekend.

It was amazing having our Alumni at the dinner and seeing them have fun on the dance floor.

Thank you to Rico Myburg for capturing these special moments.

The cornerstone was laid on 10 May 1875, featuring Psalm 144 vs 12 and 5 June 1875, is the official founding date.

Eunice celebrated 151 years in existence with gratitude.

Originally established by the Dutch Reformed Church as the Oranje Vrij Staat Dames Instituut, the first classrooms were occupied on this date with Miss Elizabeth Laird from Scotland serving as headmistress.

We raise a toast to many more happy years!
