Using the correct needle size and injection site is essential for safe and effective administration of veterinary medicines and vaccines. For MSD Animal Health products, always check the specific product label or package insert, as the recommended needle size, route of administration and injection site may differ between products.

1. Choose the Correct Needle Gauge:

For many cattle vaccines and injectable products, 16- to 18-gauge needles may be appropriate. Always select the smallest needle through which the product flows easily, unless the product label specifies otherwise.

2. Choose the Correct Needle Length:

Needle length should be selected according to the route of administration, animal size and product requirements.

3. Use the Correct Injection Site:

As a general cattle-management principle, use the neck rather than the rump or valuable cuts of the carcass whenever the product label permits. The exact site, however, must be determined by the product's directions.

4. Use Clean and Sterile Equipment:

• Use clean, appropriate equipment.
• Use a sharp, sterile needle.
• Use a separate sterile, sharp needle for each animal where specified.
• Avoid injecting through visibly dirty skin.
• Follow the product's aseptic requirements.
• Dispose of used needles and other equipment safely.

5. Always Check the MSD Product Label before administering an MSD Animal Health product.
