[FREE STATE JUNIOR COMMISSIONERS EQUIPPED THROUGH FINANCIAL LITERACY AND INDUCTION WORKSHOP]
The South African Police Service (SAPS), in partnership with Old Mutual, hosted a Financial Literacy and Induction Workshop for Free State Junior Commissioners on 29 September 2026 in Bethlehem, Lejweleputswa District in the Free State.
The programme was directed by Constable Kagiso Malau from Fezile Dabi District while Sergeant Thato Mothamane, District Youth Coordinator: Mangaung Metro, delivered the Code of Conduct, emphasising the importance of discipline, accountability and responsible conduct.
Provincial Junior Commissioner Orefile Matlala from Heatherdale Sekondêre Skool delivered a message of support, encouraging the Junior Commissioners to embrace their leadership responsibilities and contribute positively towards their schools and communities.
Mr Mahlomola from the Old Mutual Regional Office in Bloemfontein facilitated the financial literacy session, addressing three types of savings, financial goal setting and income diversification. He further encouraged both Junior Commissioners and SAPS members to make use of the Vault22 app, a personal financial wellness application aimed at assisting users to better understand and manage their finances and make informed financial decisions.
Captain Mkhombo from the Division: Visible Policing and Operations led the induction session, equipping the Junior Commissioners with a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities while encouraging them to embrace their leadership journey, uphold discipline and accountability, and use their positions to inspire positive change within their schools and communities.
Sergeant Mojalefa Chabalala from Provincial Youth Crime Prevention delivered a presentation on violence in schools, highlighting the challenges affecting learners and the importance of prevention, early intervention and collaborative efforts to promote safer school environments.
The workshop reinforced the importance of strategic partnerships between SAPS, Old Mutual, schools and communities in empowering young people, promoting responsible leadership and strengthening youth-focused crime prevention initiatives.
The programme concluded with closing remarks by Deputy Provincial Junior Commissioner Charl Jayden Mathobie from Brebner High School , who encouraged the Junior Commissioners to take ownership of their leadership responsibilities, apply the knowledge gained during the workshop and continue serving as positive role models in their schools and communities.
