The stimulation of *sensory systems* plays a critical role in a child's overall development and forms the foundation for both learning and emotional well-being. When these systems are well developed and integrated, children are better equipped to focus attention, regulate emotions, and acquire new skills.
The *vestibular system* , located in the inner ear, is responsible for balance, spatial orientation, and the perception of movement. It helps a child understand where their body is in space and how to control movement.
*A well-developed vestibular system is important because it:*
Supports emotional regulation by having a calming and organising effect on the nervous system. Children with poor vestibular processing may become easily over- or under-stimulated, leading to irritability, anxiety, or withdrawal.
Enhances attention and concentration, which are essential for learning in a classroom environment.
Improves posture and balance, forming the foundation for fine and gross motor skills such as writing, sitting, and participating in activities.
Supports eye movements and visual tracking, which are critical for reading and writing.
Adequate vestibular stimulation through movement (e.g., swinging, climbing, spinning, and jumping) therefore lays a strong foundation for both emotional stability and academic readiness.
The *olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) systems* play an important, yet often underestimated role in a child’s development. These systems are closely linked to the brain’s emotional and memory centres, influencing not only eating habits but also learning, behaviour, and overall well-being.
The olfactory system (smell) enables a child to identify and interpret different scents, while the gustatory system (taste) allows for the differentiation of basic tastes (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami).
*Adequate stimulation and development of these systems contribute to learning readiness by:*
Supporting emotional security and regulation: Smell is directly linked to emotions and memory. Familiar, pleasant scents can have a calming effect and assist with transitions and adjustment to new environments such as school.
Enhancing attention and alertness: Sensory input, including smell and taste, can help regulate arousal levels, influencing a child’s ability to focus and participate.
Promoting healthy eating habits and physical development: Well-developed smell and taste systems reduce sensory defensiveness toward food and support adequate nutrition, which is essential for growth and brain development.
Supporting language development: Exposure to different smells and tastes, combined with naming and describing them, expands vocabulary and descriptive language skills.
Facilitating sensory regulation: These systems work together with other sensory inputs to support a more balanced and integrated nervous system, positively impacting learning and behaviour.
Providing opportunities for children to explore a variety of smells and tastes (e.g., during play and food preparation) supports both sensory development and emotional and academic readiness.
Today’s Book Day was a wonderful celebration of creativity and language, with our learners bringing idioms to life through their imaginative outfits. From “raining cats and dogs” to “a piece of cake,” the effort and enthusiasm shown by each child truly made the day special. Thank you to all our parents for your incredible support in helping the learners prepare—your involvement made this experience both meaningful and memorable for everyone involved.
