Kobe Japan Earthquake

The 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan is a classic geography case study of a major natural disaster in a wealthy, developed nation.

Location: Kobe is a major port city and megacity located on the southern side of Honshu island, in the Kansai region of Japan. Tectonic Setting: It sits near a destructive (convergent) plate boundary where the Philippine Sea and Pacific plates subduct beneath the Eurasian plate

The Event: The Great Hanshin Earthquake struck on January 17, 1995, at 5:46 AM. It measured 7.2 on the Richter scale (6.9 on the moment magnitude scale) with a shallow focus of 16 km.

Impacts (Effects)

Primary Effects: Over 6,400 deaths (many in older wooden homes or due to collapsed structures).Around 40,000 people injured. Collapse of major infrastructure, including sections of the elevated Hanshin Expressway and buckled railway lines. Ruptured gas and water mains.

Secondary Effects: 300,000 people left homeless. Over 300 fires broke out from broken gas lines and destroyed traditional wooden buildings, which spread rapidly because damaged roads blocked fire crews.2 million homes lost electricity and 1 million lacked water for 10 days

Total economic cost exceeded $100 billion to $220 billion.

Responses and Management Immediate Response: Emergency services faced severe traffic jams and blocked routes. The local government faced criticism for a slow initial deployment of troops and initial rejection of foreign aid.

Long-Term Responses: Rebuilding focused on creating earthquake-resistant structures with steel frames and rubber shock absorbers. City planning was updated to include wider roads and more open fire-breaks. Improved public earthquake drills and monitoring equipment implementation

Cambridge vs IEB is a big decision in most schools across South Africa

They are built for different kinds of learners:

1. The Core Difference

Cambridge is content-driven and exam-drive. The syllabus is fixed, deep, and you are judged 100% on the final exam.

IEB is skills-driven and application-driven. It has 25% CASS / SBA - research projects, orals, portfolio. Final exam is less about recall, more about "apply this to a new case study."

2. Which student suits which?

Choose Cambridge if you are:
- Self-disciplined and can sit and study for hours
- Good at remembering facts, formulas, definitions
- Calm in high-stakes final exams - you can revise 2 years of work and deliver in 2 hours
- Planning to apply to UK, US, Europe, or want the most internationally recognized certificate in Zim

Choose IEB if:
- You learn by doing and talking, not just reading
- You are strong in English expression, debating, explaining your thinking
- You struggle to perform if everything depends on one exam - you do better when projects boost your mark
- You want to go to university in South Africa. IEB students adapt faster to university because they already do research.
