At Oppieplaas Academy, education goes far beyond the classroom.
The Grade 4 learners have been entrusted with their very own rabbit to care for. From feeding and grooming to walking, cleaning, and ensuring their rabbit is healthy and happy, our learners take full responsibility for the wellbeing of another living creature.
These aren't just fun activities—they're valuable life lessons.
🌱 They learn responsibility. 🤝 They develop compassion. 💪 They build commitment. ❤️ They discover the rewards of caring for something other than themselves.
While many children spend break time simply waiting for the next lesson, our learners are busy making a difference, gaining practical experience, and creating unforgettable memories.

🕯️ Grade 5 Natural Sciences – Learning About Fire and Oxygen 🔥
Last week our Grade 5 learners took part in an exciting practical science investigation using candles to explore the role of oxygen in combustion.

Through this hands-on experiment, learners discovered:
🕯️ Why a candle cannot keep burning without oxygen.
🔥 The three elements needed for a fire to burn (heat, fuel and oxygen). 🚒 How fires can be extinguished by removing one of these elements, especially oxygen. ⚠️

How fires can start and the importance of fire safety.
By carrying out the investigation themselves, learners were able to observe scientific concepts in action, ask questions, make predictions, and draw their own conclusions.

Practical learning brings science to life and helps learners develop critical thinking skills while understanding real-world applications. We are proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity our Grade 5 learners showed today! 🌟🔬

🌱 Grade 4 Natural Sciences – Learning Through Growing! 🌱
Our Grade 4 learners are discovering the amazing journey of a bean seed, from germination to becoming a healthy growing plant.

By planting and caring for their own bean seeds, learners are observing each stage of the plant life cycle firsthand: 🌱 Seed 💧 Germination 🌿 Seedling 🍃 Growing Plant

This hands-on activity helps learners understand: • What seeds need to grow (water, sunlight, air and warmth)
• How roots and shoots develop
• The different stages of plant growth
• The importance of patience, responsibility and daily observation

The best part is that each learner is growing and caring for their own bean plant, making this a practical learning experience rather than simply reading about it in a textbook.

Learning is always more meaningful when learners can see, touch and experience science for themselves! 🌿💚

⚖️🤸‍♀️ Balance, coordination, and lots of fun in Grade 1 PE!

Today our Grade 1 learners focused on midline crossing and balance. They carefully walked heel to toe along a rope while using the opposite hand to pick up beanbags and place them on the opposite side. This fun activity helped develop balance, coordination, concentration, and body awareness while building important gross motor skills.

We are so proud of how well our learners listened, focused, and encouraged one another! 🌟
