Royal Drakensberg Education Trust Supporting children’s development from infancy to 10 years in the Northern Drakensberg At the entrance to The Cavern there stood a roofless sandstone barn.

Built with blocks hewn from the surrounding hills, this lovely old building had stood empty for many a year. It has now emerged from its chrysalis and burst upon our valley as our beautiful new primary school – The Royal Drakensberg Primary School. Standing proud and glowing in the sun, this double-story thatched building looks out over the valley it serves. We believe that there is a great need f

or holistic education of a world class standard in our area. Conditions in these rural areas are poor and the teachers lack resources and infrastructure. We feel that an established independent school, which is properly staffed and managed, will go a long way to giving children the necessary grounding to reach their maximum potential. To this end we opened our little school in 2007. The school caters for Grade 000 to Grade 4. The school is a beautiful microcosm of South African society, catering for a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. The creation of this school has been an incredible journey as we watch the children blossom and flourish in this nurturing environment.

Carol crossed paths with us a little while ago, and we are so grateful that she did. 💙

Carol lovingly makes rag dolls and dolls’ clothes, which she has generously donated to our children. On her first visit, she spent several days working in the village and helping to screen the children’s eyesight.

Last week, she returned with another special donation and had the joy of watching the children engage with the dolls she had so carefully crafted.

Carol shared: “The toddlers had them when I was there… Dolls being loved, bathed, getting a meal and going in a taxi. I’m not sure where they were headed, but transport is the theme this week! The driver had a steering wheel, and I’m sure they nearly made it to Bergville.”

These beautiful connections between our donors and the children inspire us all. Seeing the children so happily engaged in imaginative play - and Carol witnessing her creations being loved - was incredibly special.

The joy of delivery day! 🩶

A huge thank you to our wonderful knitters for the beautifully crafted jerseys and beanies, which arrived just in time for the Drakensberg snow and this really cold snap! ❄️🧶 The Rotary Club of Retford

We get to experience the delight as these warm woollies are handed out, and we only wish we could package up that joy and send it back to every person who takes the time to create these gorgeous pieces for the children.

What a lovely Thankyou!

The latest batch of knitwear has arrived in South Africa and been distributed amongst the children in the schools that we support.

Retford Rotary Club continues to support Royal Drakensberg Education Trust with annual parcels containing scores of hand knitted jumpers and hats. These are knitted by our volunteers over a year and then sent to Kwazulu Natal, to arrive in time for their winter, which is around now.

We received a very nice Thankyou card from them, showing the delight of some of the children receiving jumpers.
