In a recent clay class with Tamaryn at our Art School in Northmead, Benoni, we went back to the basics, creating pinch pots and building with coils.

And once again, we discovered that the basics are not so basic! 👐✨

There is so much to learn in simply working with clay, feeling the material, understanding its movement, and discovering how small techniques can make such a big difference.

Sometimes going back to the beginning is exactly where the real learning happens.

And if you have always wanted to try working with clay, this is your chance! ❤️We are starting a new beginners clay class soon, where you can learn the fundamentals in a relaxed and creative environment.

Spotlight on Teacher Karen Bond!

Every artist has a beginning. Some of the most beautiful artistic journeys are found in the space between those early sketches and the work we create today.

Today we are shining the spotlight on Karen Bond, one of the wonderful teachers at Art Alive Art School.

Swipe through Karen’s journey, from her early sketches and drawings to the beautiful oil paintings she creates today. Her work is a wonderful reminder that artistic growth doesn’t happen overnight. It comes through practice, patience, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning.

At Art Alive Art School,
we believe that learning to see is just as important as learning to draw.

In this spotlight, Karen Bond shares why tonal value is such an important part of creating art. Light and dark are what give an artwork depth, dimension and form. They help us understand where the light falls, where shadows begin and how objects come alive on the page.

Karen reminds us that before we worry about colour, we need to learn to truly see the values within what we are looking at.

It is often the subtle changes between light, mid tone and dark that can transform a flat drawing into something with feeling, depth and presence.

In Karen’s words:

Printing a black and white copy of your reference helps you identify the lightest value and darkest value so when struggling with the colour palette take a photo of your painting and change it to Monochrome and compare it to you B&W copy of reference. This will highlight where the values are off.
