How First Aid Training Supports Safer Workplaces

Every workplace has a responsibility to provide a safe environment for employees, visitors, and customers. While safety measures help prevent accidents, emergencies can still happen without warning. When they do, having trained first aiders on site can make all the difference.

A Legal Responsibility
The Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) places a responsibility on South African employers to provide and maintain, as far as reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to employees’ health. The General Safety Regulations also require employers to take reasonable steps to ensure that injured or ill employees receive prompt first aid treatment and that workplaces with more than five employees have accessible first aid boxes.

First aid training is therefore more than a compliance requirement—it is an investment in the well-being of every person in the workplace.

Strong communities begin with strong, informed and supported families.

Philani’s Home and Family Management Programme is designed to help learners better understand themselves, their families and their role within the wider community. The programme also supports deeper insight into communication, helping learners engage more effectively with family members, teams, groups and community members.

Presented over four consecutive days, the programme covers practical and personal topics such as self-image, personal care, stress and depression, family care, family planning, addiction, STI’s and HIV/AIDS, personal finances, communication, conflict management, parental guidance, marriage enrichment, and safety in and around the home.

By the end of the programme, learners are supported to understand their identity and role in society, recognise factors that contribute to healthy living, manage personal finances, and identify safety and environmental risks in their local environment.

This is practical training for everyday life — helping individuals, families and communities grow with greater confidence, awareness and responsibility.

Thought of the Day

When a woman gains a skill, a family gains opportunity.

Skills development is more than training. It is confidence, independence, possibility and progress. When women are equipped to grow, they carry that growth into their homes, workplaces and communities.

Empowered women transform communities.

💚 HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY

Today, we celebrate the courage, strength, resilience, and contribution of women across South Africa.

At Philani, we see the power of women every day — as learners, trainers, caregivers, professionals, leaders, and changemakers within their families and communities.

When women gain access to practical skills, recognised training, and meaningful opportunities, the impact reaches far beyond the individual. Families are supported, workplaces are strengthened, and communities become more resilient.

This Women’s Day, we honour every woman who continues to learn, lead, care, grow, and create a better future for those around her.

Here’s to women who transform lives and build futures that last.

Happy Women’s Day, South Africa.
