What exactly are we celebrating today?
Heritage Day is a day to recognise and celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, languages, histories and identities that make up South Africa.
But heritage is more than food, clothing, music or traditional celebrations.
🌍 Heritage is where our stories come from.
🗣️ It is the languages we speak.
🎶 It is the music and traditions passed down through generations.
👨👩👧👦 It is the people, places and experiences that shape our identity.
📖 It is also remembering the histories, both the difficult and the beautiful, that have shaped our country.
Did you know?
Heritage Day was officially declared a public holiday in South Africa in 1995. The date, 24 September, is also associated with King Shaka Zulu, and the day has evolved into a broader celebration of South Africa's diverse cultural heritage.
Today, Heritage Day reminds us that our differences are part of the story of South Africa.
❤️ We don't have to share the same heritage to respect one another's heritage.
