The GeneTalk presentation of Dr Rika Pienaar scheduled for 17 October 2026 will extend insights from use of the CarePoint BRCA Assay to plus transcriptional gene profiling, for integration of germline and tumour genetics. Genetic counselling is vital to communicate the different levels of risk to affected families that may benefit from precision oncology.

Dr Chantelle Jennifer Scott will chair the 2026 GeneTalk that wil take place on 17 October in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She will present the results of an implementation study combining rapid BRCA1/2 point-of-care DNA testing with genetic counselling as a novel approach to increase access to precision oncology. This applies to , , and cancer, all eligible for PARP inhibitors when a BRCA1/2 gene variant is detected. Dr Rika Pienaar and Dr Ettienne Myburgh are invited speakers based on patient referral and their co-authorship on two relevant Frontiers in Oncology articles published in 2021 by Lwando Mampunye and Jaco Oosthuizen, respectively. Janine Forbes - Cronje who works closely with registered medical scientists Dr Armand Peeters and Prof Maritha Kotze, is the contact person taking care of the sample collection process and much more. Glaudina Loots will open the event and Rizwana Mia may close off with a few words on the importance of translational research to help bridge the genomic medicine access gap. There will also be an opportunity to discuss possible collaboration or participation in a new project planned by researchers at the SAMRC.

Implementing a novel genetic counselling model using the CarePoint BRCA Assay - where precision oncology begins!
Two of the cancer patients participating in this pilot access program led by Prof Maritha Kotze and Dr Chantelle Jennifer Scott proceeded with whole genome sequencing (WGS) - an extension of the Wellness GeneScreen focused on risk and treatment stratification into inherited, lifestyle-triggered and therapy-associated pathologies. The value of the BRCA point-of-care assay was first demonstrated by Lwando Mampunye in early-stage breast cancer patients referred for the assay. It is also used in combination with the NGS Assay as presented by Dr Rika Pienaar at the User Group meeting in Spain during April 2026.
