The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships
The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) is open to highly qualified students who are citizens of countries on the OECD/DAC list and who will study full-time for a master’s degree in Sweden. The scholarships cover both living costs, tuition fees, a travel grant and insurance. An estimated 300 scholarships will be available. Out of these, 10 scholarships are assigned to South African citizens.
The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live. Scholarships will only be granted to candidates who have followed the steps of the university admission and been admitted to one of the eligible master programmes in Sweden.
Selection and eligibility criteria for South Africans
- Applicants must be South African citizens but may, at the time of their application and admission, reside in a country other than South Africa
- Applicants should show an ambition to make a difference by working with issues which contribute to a just and sustainable development in South Africa, in a long term perspective.
- Priority will be given to applicants who have completed bachelor’s studies from a South African university and also to applicants choosing study programmes with an emphasis on the following subject areas: business, democracy, environment and sustainability, gender studies, human rights, information and communication technologies, law and social studies.
- Applicants must apply and be accepted to a Swedish University within a relevant master’s programme (see below)
- Applicants may not have lived for more than two years in Sweden previously, or hold a degree from a Swedish university.
Application period for the scholarship
The call for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) for the academic year of 2017/2018 is opening 1 December 2016. The application process has been divided in to two application periods. The first application period will be between 1 December 2016 and 16 January 2017.
