The shared goal of Tzu Chi volunteers is to cultivate sincerity, integrity, faith, and honesty within while exercising kindness, compassion, joy, and selflessness to humanity through concrete actions. Transcending the bounds of race, nationality, language, and religion, they serve the world under the notion that “when others are hurting, we feel their pain; when others suffer, we feel their sorrow

Among all the sufferings in life — birth, aging, illness, and death — illness brings the greatest pain, especially when poverty and lack of medical care make the situation even harder.

This case involves an elderly woman, around 80 years old, suffering from diabetes. Her only government subsidy was taken by her son, leaving her helpless. Both legs developed severe infections due to poor circulation, with three open wounds that even bred maggots.

Volunteers guided the local team on how to clean and disinfect the wounds, keep the environment sanitary, change dressings properly, and provide comfort and emotional support to the patient.

May our care help her regain a sense of dignity and warmth in life.

Makause

Last week, three fires broke out in the Maukause, Primrose area, affecting a total of 16 households. One of the major fires involving 11 homes was caused by illegal electrical connections.

Volunteers carried out an emergency relief activity, distributing rice, blankets, and food parcels to the affected families.

They also conducted brief fire safety education, reminding residents to use gas, coal, and electric stoves with caution, and to look out for one another since tin-roof houses are easily set ablaze.

Volunteers offered words of comfort and encouragement, hoping the residents can soon rebuild their homes and restore their lives

Makause Case Home Visit

Due to age-related illnesses and diabetes, his feet have severe poor circulation and maggots infesting the wounds. His family took his pension card and abandoned him. Government hospice care is limited and difficult for the average person to access.

What's needed now is...home care and assistance from a group of volunteers. Cases like this are common in squartercamp 😓😓😓

Marathon primrose

Emergency Relief for 14 Households Affected by Fire in Marathon

Today, Tzu Chi volunteers carried out an emergency fire relief distribution for 14 households in Marathon. The fire broke out on Friday evening in one of the informal settlements commonly found in Black communities, where homes are often constructed from corrugated iron sheets. These areas are prone to fires due to the frequent use of paraffin stoves. Once a fire starts, it can quickly spread and affect multiple households.

In this case, all 14 homes were completely destroyed, and the affected families—already living in poverty—lost everything. They are now temporarily staying with neighbors and will slowly begin to rebuild their shelters with iron sheets.

Tzu Chi volunteers responded by distributing rice, food parcels, blankets, second-hand clothing, and other essential supplies to help the victims through this difficult time. During the distribution, we also met some Red Cross interns who came to assess the situation and explore how the Red Cross could assist.

This emergency relief effort was successfully completed and also served as an opportunity to connect with other humanitarian organizations. Wherever there is disaster or poverty, we hope to work together with the community and society at large to spread love and bring hope to those in need.
