Let's be honest. People are tired of change.
Prosci research shows that change fatigue affects more than 70% of employees experiencing major organisational change. And McKinsey's data tells us that 70% of transformation initiatives fail – not because the strategy was wrong, but because the human side was undermanaged.
But here's what the research also shows: fatigue is compounded – sometimes catastrophically – by poor leadership through change. Tolbert and Rooke's work on adult development stages found that only around 10% of leaders operate at the developmental level required to lead complex, adaptive change effectively. The rest default to control, compliance and communication cascades – the very behaviours that erode trust and accelerate exhaustion in their teams.
So yes, the pace is relentless. Restructures. New systems. Shifting strategy. That is the reality.
What separates leaders who steady a team from those who add to the chaos isn't technical skill. It's emotional regulation. The capacity to stay composed when everything around you is shifting. The ability to read what your team needs and respond rather than react.
The Key Steps EQ Assessment measures Self-Regulation and Stress Management as two of its nine core dimensions. It shows you exactly where your default responses are serving you as a leader – and where they're not. In a season of constant change, that self-knowledge is not a luxury. It's a leadership necessity.
Two things to try this week:
1. Before your next high-stakes meeting, do three rounds of 4-7-8 breathing. Four seconds in, seven hold, eight out. It takes 57 seconds and shifts your nervous system state before you walk in the door.
2. Notice the gap between trigger and response. Even a five-second pause changes the conversation.
Then take the assessment and give yourself the leadership edge that actually matters right now: https://keysteps.co.za/eq-assessment/.
How are you leading yourself through this season? I'd love to hear what's working.

The higher you climb, the more carefully people speak around you. The fewer honest reflections you receive. The more your unchecked mental habits go unquestioned. On Monday I shared a piece about my daughter Mila and what she taught me about metacognition. But that piece raised a deeper question for many of us.
"How do I keep examining my own thinking when no one is holding up the mirror anymore?"
This is exactly what 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗟𝗣 is built for.
A confidential thinking partner. A proven methodology. And a space where you can:
✦ Catch reactive patterns before they cost you ✦ Examine the beliefs running beneath your decisions ✦ Rewire mental habits that no longer serve you ✦ Lead from a place of clarity, calm and conviction
This is not advice-giving or surface-level mentoring. It is a deeply personal, tool-driven, science-backed coaching experience, designed to transform the way you think, decide and lead.
If no one is holding up the mirror for you right now, this is your invitation to change that. Comment "𝗖𝗢𝗔𝗖𝗛" or send me a message to begin your coaching journey with us so you too can… ‘be the difference that makes the 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚.'

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 – 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸.
My daughter Mila turns 8 today. And in the middle of the birthday chaos this past week – cake, cousins and lots of questions about presents – she said something that stopped me in my tracks.
"Mommy, I think I'm worrying about this for nothing."
Eight years old. And she already knows when her own thinking is getting in her way.
That, right there, is 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. And it is one of the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 – and most overlooked – 𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁
Self-awareness is the lowest-investment, highest-return leadership skill available to you.
Yet most leaders overestimate it. Research by organisational psychologist Tasha Eurich found 95% of people believe they're self-aware. Only 10 to 15% actually are.
That gap is where blind spots live. Where culture quietly erodes. Where the same patterns keep showing up in performance reviews, in team dynamics and in your own frustrations.
The Key Steps EQ Assessment measures nine dimensions of emotional intelligence, including a Motivational Distortion score that flags how honestly you've answered. It turns self-perception into genuine self-insight.
One Key Step for you to take this week to increase your self-awareness:
At the end of each day, ask yourself one question…
What did I do today that helped or hurt the people around me?
Write it down. Patterns surface fast.
Curious where your real EQ sits?
Nine dimensions, evidence-based and built for leaders who want genuine self-insight rather than flattering self-perception:

𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝟲 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸
In demanding and complex work environments, many of us fall into the 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿. I see so many leaders modelling this behaviour. Yet 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁.
Our brain is not designed for constant pressure. It’s designed to operate in 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆. When we ignore these cycles, our cognitive capacity declines, emotional reactivity increases and we compromise our decision-making. Neuroscience and performance psychology confirm that sustainable performance depends less on time spent working and more on 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆.
Keept reading my article so we can 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 (of overwork) and 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥⁶ 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 to help sustain clarity, resilience and wellbeing. It’s up to us to take tangible Key Steps to…

The world is exhausted. And too many leaders are pretending they're not.
We are navigating geopolitical instability, economic pressure, team burnout and the relentless demand to perform at pace. The neuroscience is unambiguous: chronic stress shrinks the prefrontal cortex – the very part of the brain you need for strategic thinking, wise decisions and empathy.
You cannot lead well from depletion.
And yet the unspoken culture in most organisations still rewards endurance over wisdom. Still mistakes urgency for effectiveness. Still confuses being always available with being truly present.
Workers' Day has passed. But the question it raised hasn't.
Am I honouring the worker within me?
Not with a wellness programme or a long weekend. But with the daily, disciplined choice to lead from a place of genuine sustainability – not heroics.
Because here is what the research tells us: leaders who regulate themselves create the neurological conditions for trust. Leaders who model rest, boundaries and honest self-awareness give their teams permission to do the same.
That ripples.
Sustainable contribution is not built on depletion. It is built on dignity – internally and externally.
In a world that is asking more of leaders than ever before, the most countercultural thing you can do is refuse to run on empty.
That choice – made consistently, quietly, daily – might just be the difference that makes the difference.
