We love hearing from our Alumni Students and are happy to share yet another Alumni Story, sent by Michael Irons.

"After graduating from Gateway in 2011 and then taking a gap year, I started my BEng Mech degree. at the University of Pretoria. Shortly after graduating from UP in 2019, I was hired at the ChemiCorp group as project manager. Two years later, the group opened up the new PrepAir Industrial Gases company to which I was then transferred. A few months ago, I was promoted to Junior Partner at PrepAir. In the same period of time I also started a specialty coffee roastery called Cast Iron Coffee Co. I've been fortunate enough to expand it several times with some exciting ventures in the works around the Lowveld. I'm also privileged enough to run and manage the Serving Barberton community project with my family as we make a difference in Barberton in these challenging times.

Gateway has had a massive impact in my life and on the decisions I've had to make. It has shaped the journey and the place where I currently find myself. A strong solid foundation will set you up for success. As always, it is up to the individual to determine what they want to achieve in life and how far they want to go. The foundation that Gateway provides gives clarity to this ideal. The effect that Gateway has on people extends further than the physical boundaries of Barberton. It was a privilege to be part of that."

Another Alumni Story
Thanks for sharing, Justin.

Justin Meerholz, Gateway Christian School graduate 2015.
My journey with Gateway was amazing! I felt called to come to the school in 2011 while at the High School. God made a way for me to come to Gateway and the journey was amazing! I got wonderful opportunities at Gateway to learn how to play instruments like bass and acoustic guitar. In 2015 I was made head leader and I started working at Gateway in 2016 as the IT teacher. In 2017 I left to do a gap year in Pietermaritzburg called Destiny Leadership Academy. There I was able to use what I learned at Gateway to really achieve something for myself. I had wonderful opportunities to play on stage with massive bands and even lead worship a few times. In 2018 I was one of 4 people chosen from a group of 37 people to stay on and work at the school there at the church. I was also given the responsibility of going to a church in Northdale and leading the worship there. The church was just planted in December 2017, so I was the church’s first permanent worship leader. I led worship every Friday night and Sunday morning. I had to build a band from that church and the members therein. When I left the church in July of 2019, they were a self-sufficient church and could lead worship with members from their own church and not rely on outside help from other churches. I came back to Gateway as their IT teacher and now I’m also the school’s Sports Coordinator. I have had such wonderful opportunities from the school and from the amazing management at the school. They were able to see greatness and trustworthiness in me even when I could not. They could see the potential in me and they were able to challenge me in such a way to bring out those qualities. I wouldn’t be anywhere without Gateway. Thank you Gateway for all you have done in my life.

How lovely to hear from another of our Alumni students, Marco Fourie. He gave us permission to share his message.

Good day everyone,

Well, where do I begin? I graduated in 2019 and moved through to Pretoria to further my studies, but covid happened and gave me some time to reflect on what I would like to do in life. I decided to work off my talent and not my skills, as talents can be backed by skills. So I decided to go into the service industry, I am currently in the final process of getting my culinary diploma and becoming a fully qualified chef. I have catered for a few events, worked for a hotel, and am currently working as an intern at CTIA in Centurion. I have met many interesting people and befriended some as they say I have great potential for raising through the ranks of the kitchen. Although the chef life seems fun, it is a constant battle to learn how to be more unique and skilled than rivals, media has romanticized this industry to a great degree. Feel free to have a look at some of my work on Instagram under cheffourie.

Kind regards,

Marco Theodorus Fourie

Thank you Marco!! We had a look at his instagram page and he really knows what he is doing, it looks amazing. Well done, we are proud of you.

"I attended Gateway from 2002 and graduated in 2008.

I loved my time there. I also had the privilege of being head boy in my matric year.

I now live in Durban with my beautiful wife and two adorable kids. I have been working for the same audit firm for the last 14 years. I had the great opportunity to study while working. Today I am a Chartered Account and soon a registered auditor. I am in the process of starting my own firm and becoming a partner in my current firm.

I am grateful for the discipline learned at Gateway and the solid spiritual foundation.

I was never the smartest or the wealthiest, but with determination and grit, I stuck it out and achieved my goals. I'd like to encourage the students not to feel discouraged, you can achieve your goals, just keep working at them. School and studies only take up about 15%-30% of your life, work hard during these years and you will reap the benefits for the next 70%-85% of your life. In all your ways acknowledge God and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:6."

Kind Regards

Kyle Watson CA (SA)

Senior Audit Manager
