It is amazing how much the word ‘practical’, ‘effective’ or 'street self defense' is used to describe a certain Martial Art system. Yes, many fighting skills are practical and effective within realm of fighting, the question is how practical are these skills within modern society and against various types of attacks(ers) i.e. aggressive night club attack, skilful 'street' fighters, street thugs, road rage, trained criminals, terrorists, hijackers, rapists, home invasions to name only a few. It is a police term, though never widely used in the law enforcement community, which refers to Realistic Conflict Rehearsal training. The term 'reality-based' was brought to light thanks to one of the world's leading reality based instructors, Sergeant Jim Wagner from the USA. Morné Swanepoel is personally trained and certified by Sgt. Jim Wagner who is a former soldier, corrections officer, street cop, SWAT officer, diplomatic bodyguard, and counter terrorist agent for the United States government after 9/11. Although there are many systems today calling themselves “reality-based,” because they see themselves as training more realistically and have abandoned non-essential customs and traditions, few of them are actually “complete reality based” systems. In other words, they lack pre-conflict and post-conflict training in their curriculum's. Their conflict training may be lacking simply because they have no real-world experience with criminals, abnormal scenarios or terrorism. Reality-based systems are those systems that teach the fundamental self-defense techniques that are found in both the traditional-based and sport-based systems, but go a step further by training specifically for modern conflict situations, and eliminating outdated techniques and training methods.
