Good Morning University of Johannesburg 🤓🤓
On this Zero Discrimination Day this year, under the theme “Save lives: Decriminalise”, UNAIDS is highlighting how the decriminalisation of key populations and people living with HIV saves lives and helps advance the end of the AIDS pandemic.
Criminal laws targeting key populations and people living with HIV violate people’s human rights, exacerbate the stigma people face and put people in danger by creating barriers to the support and services they need to protect their health.
In 2021, the world set ambitious law reform targets to remove criminal laws that are undermining the HIV response and leaving key populations behind. Recognising decriminalization as a critical element in the response, countries made a commitment that by 2025 less than 10% of countries would have punitive legal and policy environments that affect the HIV response.
However, despite some encouraging reforms, the world is far from achieving the target. In fact, today there are 134 countries explicitly criminalising or otherwise prosecuting HIV exposure, non-disclosure or transmission; 20 countries criminalise and/or prosecute transgender persons; 153 countries criminalise at least one aspect of s*x work; and 67 countries now criminalize consensual same-s*x s*xual activity, according to UNAIDS. In addition, 48 countries still place restrictions on entry into their territory for people living with HIV, while 53 countries report that they require mandatory HIV testing, for example for marriage certificates or for performing certain professions. 106 countries report requiring parental consent for adolescents to access HIV testing.
Criminalisation drives discrimination and structural inequalities. It robs people of the prospect of healthy and fulfilling lives. And it holds back the end of AIDS.
We must end criminalization to save lives.

Hello and welcome to Safezone Tuesday. It is almost the end of the year as usual we are concerned about your safety during the holiday period. In today’s post, we are going to look at Safety tips when going out and next week will wrap up the month’s tips on getting support if violence does occur. University of Johannesburg UJFM 🤓🙂
GENERAL TIPS – Going Out
• Trust your gut – If you feel threatened or unsafe, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible
• Leave a trail – Let someone you trust know your fabulous plans, including if you hook up with someone, where you’re going and how long. If you leave a note, make sure this trusted person knows where you left it.
• Take a friend – when heading to and leaving your destination or waiting for transportation.
• Look alert – If you do not have a travel friend, stay alert, look alert, and stick near other people when walking or waiting for transportation.
• Watch your drink – Or buy your own, just make sure the only person mixing something into it is the bartender.
• Know your limits – If you are planning to use substances, including alcohol, decide how much and try to stick to it.
• Be aware of surroundings – Locate 24-hour establishments to seek help if you feel unsafe. Move towards a “safer place,” like a more public space if you feel unsafe.

Have you ever heard someone say my drink was spiked and I don’t know what happened after that?? This is a real phenomenon, and it can happen to you! Good Morning friends and welcome to University of Johannesburg PsyCaD UJFM 🥰🤓
Drink spiking is when someone puts drugs or alcohol into your drink without you knowing. The drugs used are mind-altering substances that affect how you behave. So-called 'date r**e drugs' may be used to spike a drink before a s*xual assault. Date r**e drugs can come in powder or liquid form. They may not have an unusual taste or smell, these drugs take effect within 30 minutes, and symptoms usually last for several hours.
Although your symptoms will depend on which substance has been used, they usually include some of the following:
• lowered inhibitions
• difficulty concentrating or speaking
• loss of balance and finding it hard to move
• visual problems, particularly blurred vision
• memory loss (amnesia) or 'blackouts'
• feeling confused or disorientated, particularly after waking up (if you have been asleep)
• paranoia (a feeling of fear or distrust of others)
• hallucinations (seeing, hearing or touching things that are not there) or having an 'out of body' experience
• nausea and vomiting
• unconsciousness
Be careful when you’re out, never leave your drinks unattended, and never consume a drink that looks unusual, trust your gut, and stay woke!

Good Morning friends. The Harvard Health Blog shared this anecdote to explain self-care: During pre-flight safety talks, a flight attendant says to secure your oxygen mask before helping someone else. 🤓🥰
The idea is simple – you can’t care for others if you don’t care for yourself. Therefore, self-care is about making time for your physical and mental health. As anxiety rises across the country due to various societal challenges unique to South Africa, self-care is even more necessary. It’s no wonder stress balls, fidget spinners and squishy toys are popular among people of all ages as an outlet for nervous energy. University of Johannesburg🤓🥰
So, what should you do?
Self-care means giving yourself permission to relax mentally, physically, and spiritually. Here are a few self-care tips from wellness professionals:
• Learn when to say “no.” Ignore the pressure to overpromise and allow yourself to turn things down. Stick with tasks that are meaningful to you. You can’t do everything for everyone — and that’s okay!
• Get moving. Running, dancing, or walking can help boost your energy and recharge.
• Take a minute for yourself. Practice mindfulness, create a gratitude list, or focus on a few deep breathes to help reduce stress.
• Embrace a hobby. Get your creative juices flowing or find a distraction from every day stress. Some ideas include drawing, crafting, playing an instrument, or gardening.
• Be kind. Say three nice things to yourself in a mirror. Give yourself a pep talk. Treat yourself to your favourite snack. Whatever you decide to do, you deserve it!
Keep in mind that what works for someone else may not work for you. Find your own self-care routine and make it a priority.
If you feel overwhelmed…
You’re not alone. Reach out to a friend of family member and share how you feel. Ask for help with tasks to trim your to-do list.
You can also complete our self-screening tool for stress and mental health and a helpful member of our team at the Centre for Student Health and Wellness will link you to the relevant service provider .

Good Morning friends. We hosted a very exciting podcast in partnership with UJFM recently. The podcast focused on mental health and spirituality, where we talked about the nexus between mental health and spirituality from practice and experiential perspectives. Experts such as Mzamo Ntantiso from PsyCad at UJ who is both a psychologist and a traditional healer, together with Sizwe Zulu who is a UJ student and Peer Educator at the Centre for Student Health and Wellness (C-SHAW) also shared their experiences with mental health challenges and journey towards becoming a spiritual healer. Moreover, Thabiso Mathe who is a nurse, lecturer, and student counselor at the Gauteng Nursing College shared her experiences with counseling students presenting challenges related to mental health and spirituality.
The overall discussion took a deep dive into the different aspects of mental health, spirituality, and the experiences of mental health practitioners, traditional and spiritual healers, and the journey to mental wellness.
Enjoy the podcast and share friends. 🥰🤓 University of Johannesburg PsyCaD UJ Transformation Unit
