I studied botany and microbiology, so I’m used to looking for patterns in leaves, cells and things under a microscope. Recently, I started noticing patterns in myself too.
I didn’t expect to become my own case study and I definitely didn’t expect what I found to matter so much: When work gets intense, I go quiet.
Before our first study school at Maccauvlei, I was working with a project manager whose pace was completely different from mine. I felt overwhelmed, but I didn’t say anything. I just worked through weekends and tried to keep up.
From the outside, I probably looked fine, but I really wasn’t.
Later, while working on my portfolio for Maccauvlei’s Higher Certificate in Management Development, I started analysing what had happened.
And I was like, okay… the workload was a lot, but I’d also waited way too long to say I was struggling.
So the next time we worked together, I spoke up earlier. I explained what I could realistically finish and asked questions when I wasn’t sure.
The work still got done on time. I was calmer. And we worked much better together because she actually knew what was going on with me.
I’m Zandisiwe Mlotshwa, one of four young women in Maccauvlei Learning Academy’s 18-month internship programme, where we’re preparing to become facilitators.
One day, I want to be the kind of facilitator who notices when someone else has gone quiet and makes it easier for them to speak.
This Women’s Day, I’m proud that I’m learning to do that for myself first.

What can change in a year? For these four young women, quite a lot.
Remember our interns? Phomelelo, Zandisiwe, Zama and Lebogang are at the centre of our Women’s Month portrait series, Becoming at Maccauvlei.
For the past 12 months, they have been learners in our classrooms and our colleagues at the office, as they prepare to become part of the next generation of women facilitators.
Perfect strangers a year ago, these four woman are now working together to define the kind of teachers, leaders, professionals and ultimately, the type of women they want to become.
A combination of practical experience, formal learning and mentorship has challenged them to find their voice and build their confidence.
Each week during Women’s Month, we will share one intern’s story in her own words. Where did she begin? What has she learned? Who is she becoming?
