Behind every organisation are people, and behind effective people practices is a strong understanding of HR.

Our HRM Administrator learners spent 14–17 September developing their knowledge and exploring the different aspects of human resource management.

Facilitated by Erika Lee, the group brought their own workplace experiences into the learning environment, creating opportunities for discussion, questions and practical understanding.

It was four days of learning, connecting and preparing for the realities of working in HR.

What does it take to help someone else learn?

For our Occupational Trainer learners, that question was part of a week of learning, practice and reflection from 14–17 September.

Under the guidance of Sonja van der Westhuizen, learners explored the role of an occupational trainer and the knowledge and skills needed to support effective learning in the workplace.

From classroom conversations to practical engagement, the week was centred around developing trainers who can take what they learn and apply it with purpose.

From 14–18 September, our Training and Development Practitioner learners explored the knowledge and skills that support effective training and development in the workplace.

With Eloise Booysen as their facilitator, learners had the opportunity to engage with the content, share their experiences and build practical understanding throughout the week.

With Daphne Els guiding the week, learners engaged with the programme, exchanged ideas and connected their learning to real workplace situations.

Learning that connects knowledge with practice.

From 28 September to 02 October, we welcomed learners to Maccauvlei Learning Academy for our Learning and Development Professional programme, facilitated by Erika Lee.

Throughout the week, learners engaged with practical concepts, shared experiences and explored how effective learning and development can support people and organisations in the workplace.

We value creating learning experiences where people can participate, ask questions and share ideas.

Ask Bongani Ngubeni about his surname, and he’ll tell you about an ancestor with an extraordinary number of cattle.

“My surname is Ngubeni, but it comes from Nkomo,” he explains. “He got that name from having more cows than anyone else.”

Bongani, our Sales, Bookings and Collections Agent, grew up Zulu in KwaZulu-Natal. Alongside stories of his ancestors, he learned a particular way of thinking about what belonged to him.

“I’m looking after my father’s house.”

He remembers that being said even by the father of the household. The home belonged to the forefathers, the person living there was responsible for looking after it.

Bongani describes that responsibility as being an ambassador. Knowing where he comes from shapes how he cares for his family and what he hopes to pass on to his children.

He puts particular faith in what people can learn together.

“No one is smarter than all of us,” he says. “When we are put together, we are total wisdom.”

When someone in Thabela Tshangana’s family builds a new house, they go back to the old family home.
There, at the kraal, they speak to their ancestors. They explain that they are moving and ask to leave with their family and establish a home of their own.

That tradition brought Thabela back to the Eastern Cape in July. A relative had built his house from scratch, and the family gathered for the ceremony.

Thabela has worked as a housekeeper at Maccauvlei since 2022. She tries to go home every December, but she also makes the journey for family occasions like this one.

She describes celebrations with ululation and dancing, traditional b**r and food cooked over a fire in black, three-legged pots. The family slaughters an animal as part of ceremonies to speak to their ancestors and give thanks.

These gatherings happen back home, where her family’s history is rooted. Thabela grew up in a Xhosa royal family, in a village named after her ancestors.

For her, Heritage Day is a chance to reconnect with those roots and appreciate the cultures of others too.

Christmas Eve with her dad’s family. Christmas Day with her mom’s. That’s how Deborah “Debs” Graf grew up celebrating, and it’s still how her family does Christmas today.

Our Maccauvlei Training Coordinator has German roots on her dad’s side and English, Irish and Scottish roots on her mom’s. Her German family’s connection to Africa began before her father moved here.

Debs recounts how her grandmother and great-grandfather worked as anthropologists, travelling through Africa all the way up to northern region of the continent. They collected artefacts and later held an exhibition in Germany about their travels.

Her grandmother eventually came to South Africa with her two sons. One was Debs’s dad. He grew up on a farm, spending time with the farm workers’ children and learning African languages before English.

He later married her English mom.
To Debs, he was “a teddy bear”, and she loved the warmth and strong traditions of his family.
She was close to both sides of the family, although they celebrated separately.

Her dad passed away 12 years ago. Debs, her husband and her daughter still keep Christmas Eve for the German traditions and Christmas Day for a traditional English lunch.
