The Kumon Method of learning was developed over 50 years ago in Japan by Toru Kumon, a high school Maths teacher whose son was struggling with Grade 2 Maths. Mr Kumon was convinced that he could help his son improve his Maths by introducing him to the skills one step at a time. With that in mind, Toru Kumon created a series of worksheets for his son to do after school and by Grade 6 his son was able to solve integral and differential calculus problems. He achieved this by spending only 30 minutes a day completing his father’s worksheets. Kumon is not designed to improve Maths and English skills as an end in itself; it is an educational method which uses Maths and English skills to develop the potential of each child.The aim of Kumon is to unleash each child's potential to love learning, by improving confidence and self-esteem, and encouraging self-discipline and a good daily study habit. There is no failing in Kumon, because each child works at his or her own carefully monitored level.

What if education isn’t really about what your child knows? 👀

It’s about what your child is capable of becoming.

Kumon may be Maths and English on the surface, but underneath that, we’re developing skills that go far beyond the worksheets: independence, perseverance, confidence, focus and the ability to learn for yourself. ❤️

Because the goal of education shouldn’t simply be to get children through school.

It should be to help them discover and develop their potential. 🌱

And that’s what I love about Kumon. 📚

Reframe! Term 4 is the start, not the end. 🌱
It’s the set up for next year.

This is the time for your child to grow, strengthen their skills and ready themselves for the 2027 version they want to be. The version you want them to be.

Let’s not write off the rest of the year just because it’s nearly over. Try not to over stress the exam season — see it as a time to strengthen them for their future.

I don’t think most children hate reading.

They hate the feeling of struggling through something they don’t feel confident doing.

When reading becomes easier, they can stop worrying about sounding out every word and start thinking about the story, the characters, the pictures in their heads and what might happen next. 📚✨

And really, who doesn’t love a good story?

Sometimes we just need to help children become confident enough readers to discover that they love them too. ❤️

The goal is independence. The path is consistency.

I recognize that this is one of the hardest parts of parenting.

We want our children to become independent, but independence doesn’t mean stepping back completely. It means staying involved for long enough to help them build the habits that will eventually allow them to manage things for themselves.

The reminders. The routines. The daily “Have you done your Kumon?” 😂

It can feel like we’re nagging, but we’re helping them practise taking responsibility.

And one day, hopefully, you realise you don’t have to ask anymore. They just do it

Term 3 marks are flying in and we can see: “Children love to learn.” ❤️

That was Toru Kumon’s guiding philosophy, and I love seeing what happens when a child starts to believe that about themselves too.

One of our students recently had a 25%+ jump in her marks between terms. 📈

But the marks aren’t even my favourite part.

She is more confident. She’s enjoying her work. And she’s excited to tackle something new.

That’s the kind of progress we want to see at Kumon. Not just better marks, but children who discover “I can do this.” 🥰📚

Basics first. Confidence follows. 💪✨

A high schooler came to us struggling. We spent one week drilling addition & multiplication bonds until they were instant. 🧠

This week? He’s smashing positive & negative numbers - work he couldn’t do 7 days ago. ➕➖➡️💥

*WHY? Because when the basics are automatic, the mind is free.* 🤯 He finally KNEW the numbers, so he wasn’t overwhelmed by the whole sum anymore. He only had to think: “is the answer negative or positive?” And that gave him the confidence to tackle it. 💡💪

Don’t underestimate the power of knowing your bonds. 🙌

“I hate to hear this because it’s simply not true:
‘My child just doesn’t have a maths brain.’”

If your child is doing well in other subjects but struggling with maths, it doesn’t mean they can’t do maths.

Maths is a skill. It needs practice, repetition and time to build those skills and make them automatic.

Sometimes the answer is simply:

Practice. Practice. Practice. 🧠➕➗❤️
