Please help us circulate. The same applies to our little daycares that we run. We need assistance and we need parents to share on our behalf as we are all in this together.

Dear Mr President, Minister of Transport and all Parents in South Africa

I am a scholar driver in South Africa. It is a small business and my only source of income.

When the president of our country decided that all schools will close due to covid 19 on 15 of March my heart sank. Listening to the President speech made me realise that my only source of income has been taken away, by his decision. I tried to stay positive and hoped and prayed that I will make it through this time.

I am just one of plus minus 900 scholar drivers in the City of Cape Town. This is only Cape Town, I can only imagine how many Scholar drivers are experiencing the exact same fate as me Nation wide.

Then some amazing statement was made by our President. Relief is coming in the form of R500 billion rand. For a moment there I saw light at the end of a dark tunnel.

Today I am so sad and disheartened by the fact that this unbelievably huge amount of money, this relief fund, was not meant for me and my many collueges country wide. We are the special people who is trusted by hundreds of thousands of parents in this country to transport their children daily.

I think I speak on behalf of all scholar drivers when I say that we are in this business because we have a unique passion for children. We are in this business against all odds even if it gets very tuff sometimes. In a country where the unemployement rate is sky high, we took the leap to be self employed. We contribute to the economy of the South Africa.

Scholar drivers are the parents, the social workers, the problem solvers, the protectors of the children we drive, when the parents are not there. We are the ones that become part of the children's families. We are the ones who are trusted to protect the most precious gift in South Africa, our future leaders.

We as scholar drivers have reached out to the Minister of Transport as well as the office of the President for some kind of a relief fund to cover us during this difficult time. The worst thing is, that our business will be one of the last business to become profitable again after lock down. Unfortunately we still did not receive any response from both parties.

Our main problems is, no income, for an indefinite period of time. This means no food on the table and no way to even think of paying our depts. In most cases we are the only bread winners.

Government has made relief funds available for big business. Even informal business and Spaza shops. We were just left on the way side to fend for ourselves.

We can't claim from Uif, we are self employed. We don't qualify for the SSme relief fund, as we don't meet that criteria. We can't claim from SASSA as unemployed either, and besides how can a R350 make up for the thousands of rands in Salaries taken away from us because of the decision to close schools. How does that pay the bond or the dept, it isn't even enough for a weeks food.

Did Government even consider our industry and how the closing of schools would affect our business sector.

When schools start parents as well as Government will expect us to comply with Covid 19 regulations.
This means sanitizers, protective wear, 6 or seven children in a vehicle at a time.
How will we be able to do this, when we can't even put food on our tables.
Driving under those conditions will be at a cost to ourselves, no profits will be made, our business will be running at a loss.
Was this even thought of by Government.

I just had to share our plight as Scholar Drivers under lock down in South Africa with everyone in our country.

In conclusion I hope and pray that The President of our country and the Minister of Transport will listen to our plight.

Mr President we ask for relief, you have the power and the money to stop our suffering. Please set things right.

Thank you

Please note that some of the information is true. However school dates are being reviewed. It seems like Grade 7 and 12 will be back at school on the 18th of May but this will be confirmed by each school according to health and safety regulations.
