A very special thank you to Skyla Supra’s parents, Donovan and Nicole, for the amazing day they arranged for our children today.

The children truly enjoyed every moment, and it was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces throughout the day. Experiences like these create memories that will stay with them for a very long time.

At New Redruth Academy, every child in our care holds a very special place in our hearts. We are not just a school — we are a community that supports, uplifts, and stands together in times of need.
Today, we would like to share the story of one of our own families. Travis, a Grade 11 learner, is facing significant medical challenges, yet continues to show remarkable strength, resilience, and determination. Despite everything, he has taken it upon himself to start his own small business — repairing phones, buying and selling quality used devices, and offering photography services — all in an effort to raise funds for his medical needs.
We are incredibly proud of his courage and work ethic.
As a school community, we would like to encourage anyone who is able to support Travis in any way. If there are parents, families, or companies who can make use of his services — whether it be phone repairs, purchasing devices, or photography — your support would make a meaningful difference in his journey.
Even simply sharing his story could help open doors and opportunities for him.

Hi family, friends, and kind strangers,

My name is Alison, a single mom in Johannesburg, and I’m reaching out for my son, Travis.

Last year, Travis got braces to correct a severe underbite that made eating painful and difficult. We were told that the major corrective jaw surgery he needs will cost around R500 000 — and unfortunately, our medical aid won’t cover it.

Instead of giving up, Travis took matters into his own hands.

At just 17, he started his own small business — repairing phones, buying and selling quality used devices, and offering photography services — all to raise money for his surgery. Through sheer determination and long hours of work, he has already saved enough for the first stage: wisdom teeth removal.

After a 9-month recovery, he will be able to undergo the major jaw surgery that will finally allow him to eat properly and smile without pain.

But recently, we were dealt another blow.

Travis developed a visible “cave-in” in his chest that began affecting his breathing. After multiple tests and specialist visits, he was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome — a genetic condition that now explains many of the health challenges he has faced throughout his life.

He now requires regular specialist check-ups every 3 months to monitor his heart, and he will need to see a cardiothoracic surgeon to repair his chest so he can breathe properly again.

While some of these costs are partially covered, a large portion is not. As a single mom, I’ve done everything I can to support him, but we simply cannot manage this alone.

Despite everything, Travis continues to show incredible strength. He hasn’t waited for help — he’s worked for it.

Every phone he repairs, every device he sells, and every photo shoot he completes brings him one step closer to the medical care he urgently needs.

Hierdie naweek het ons Rare Disease Day herdenk, en ons hele skoolgemeenskap het saamgestaan om hul ondersteuning te wys aan ons baie spesiale vriend, Nathan. 💜

Ons kinders het ongelooflike deernis en eenheid getoon terwyl hulle hom ondersteun het. Nathan is werklik ’n inspirasie vir ons almal – hy is ongelooflik sterk, vol selfvertroue, positiwiteit en vriendelikheid. Hy is ’n ware vriend wat elke uitdaging met moed en ’n glimlag aanpak.

Nathan herinner ons elke dag daaraan dat ons in staat is om groot dinge te bereik. Hy leer ons om nie toe te laat dat struikelblokke ons negatief maak of terughou nie, maar om bo dit uit te styg met hoop en vasberadenheid.

Ons is so trots op jou, Nathan. Dankie dat jy vir ons wys hoe ware krag, deursettingsvermoë en vriendskap lyk. 💜

📚✨ Ons Jaarlikse Boekedag-viering! ✨📚

Wat ’n ongelooflike dag het ons by New Redruth Akademie gehad tydens ons jaarlikse Boekedag! Ons kinders het soveel pret gehad om as hul gunsteling boekkarakters aan te trek. Die opgewondenheid, kreatiwiteit en vreugde regdeur die skool was werklik so kosbaar om te sien.

Hierdie jaar was ekstra spesiaal. Ons leerders het die wonderlike geleentheid gehad om Adventure at Kruger National Park with My Family te ontvang en te lees, geskryf deur Ntoto Mabaso, ’n laerskoolleerder uit ons eie land wat reeds sy heel eerste boek geskryf en gepubliseer het. Wat ’n inspirasie!

Ons het hierdie geleentheid gebruik om ons kinders te motiveer en te wys dat ’n skrywer enige ouderdom kan wees — al wat jy nodig het, is passie, toewyding en ’n droom. Daar is geen perke aan wat hulle kan bereik nie.

Ons glo dat hierdie ervaring ons leerders sal motiveer om meer te lees, groter te droom en in hulself te glo.

📚✨ Our Annual Book Day Celebration! ✨📚

What an incredible day we had at New Redruth Academy during our yearly Book Day! Our children had so much fun dressing up as their favourite book characters. The excitement, creativity and joy throughout the school were truly heartwarming to see.

This year was extra special. Our learners had the wonderful opportunity to receive and read Adventure at Kruger National Park with My Family by Ntoto Mabaso, a primary school learner from our own country who has already written and published his very first book. What an inspiration!

We used this as a powerful reminder to our children that a writer can be any age — all you need is passion, dedication and a dream. There are no limits to what they can achieve.

We are confident that this experience will motivate our learners to read more, dream bigger and believe in themselves.
