How to Use Capital Letters in English (10 Uses)
1. At the beginning of a sentence
Every sentence starts with a capital letter.
Example: She is my teacher.
2. The pronoun “I”
“I” is always capitalized, even in the middle of a sentence.
Example: My friend and I are students.
3. Names of people
Capitalize first and last names.
Example: Ali Hassan
4. Titles before names
Use capital letters when a title comes before a name.
Example: Dr. Ahmed, Mr. Smith
5. Names of places
Cities, countries, streets, and buildings take capitals.
Example: Sana’a, Yemen, Main Street
6. Days of the week
All days start with a capital letter.
Example: Monday, Friday
7. Months of the year
Months are always capitalized.
Example: January, December
8. Nationalities and languages
These are proper nouns.
Example: Yemeni, English, Arabic
9. Names of organizations and institutions
Important words are capitalized.
Example: Gateway Institute
10. The first word in direct speech
Capitalize the first word inside quotation marks.
Example: He said, “This is easy.”
Formal titles in English are small signals with long shadows. They frame respect, distance, and context. Here’s the clean map.
Common Formal Titles (General Use)
1- Mr. – adult men (married or unmarried)
2- Ms. – adult women (married or unmarried; standard in professional settings)
3- Mrs. – married women (traditional, less used professionally now)
4- Miss – unmarried women (mostly informal or traditional contexts)
5- Academic & Professional Titles
6- Dr. – men or women with a doctorate (academic or medical)
7- Prof. – professors (men or women)
8- Eng. – engineers (used in some countries, formal but region-specific)
