Proofreading vs. Editing

It can be differentiated between Proofreading and Editing through some explanations.

Firstly, Proofreading Includes the Following:
- Language formatting for consistency.
- Writing improvement.
- Grammar, spelling and typing mistakes eliminating.
- Ensuring a document is ready for publication/examination.
- Costing less than editing.

Secondly, Editing Includes the Following:
- Improving the overall quality of the text.
- Improving any language issues, in accordance with the purpose of the text.
-Clarifying the expressions.
- Removing the errors and inconsistencies.
- Maximizing the impact of discourse, particularly on objectivity and assertiveness.

الفرق بين التدقيق اللغوي والتحرير
(The Difference between Proofreading and Editing):

هناك التباس عند الكثيرين بين مصلح التدقيق اللغوي ومصطلح التحرير؛ فكلاهما من مراحل الكتابة ولكن مرحلتين مختلفتين، وتظهر أهم الفروقات بينهما فيما يلي:

المرحلة:
يأتي عمل المدقق اللُغوي كآخر خطوة في المستند قبل نشره، وذلك بتمشيطه للنص والبحث عن أي أخطاء لغوية أو مطبعية وضبطها. ويأتي هذا بعد مراجعة المحرر لمسودة المستند وإجراء تعديلاته في بناء النص ولغته وهيكله، وتأكده من تماشيه مع سياسة التحرير الخاصة بمكان العمل.

الوقت:
يأخذ التدقيق اللغوي وقتًا أقل مما تحتاجه مرحلة التحرير، إذ يستمر التحرير في أكثر من مرحلة بدءًا من المسودة الأولى وحتى تسليم النص للمدقق اللغوي.

طبيعة العمل:
غالبًا ما يعمل المدقق اللغوي منفردًا، بينما يحتاج المحرر إلى تعاون مشترك مع المؤلف؛ إذ يُجري تعديلات جوهرية في النص.

نتيجة العمل:
يجعل التدقيق اللُغوي الكتابة الجيدة خالية من الأخطاء بتعديل الأخطاء المختلفة في الكتابة والتنسيق، فهو ليس المسؤول عن الارتقاء بجودة الكتابة. بينما يعمل التحرير على تحسين جودة الكتابة بأكملها؛ بتحقيق الوضوح وسهولة القراءة والسرد السلس.

عدد الكلمات:
لا يؤثر التدقيق اللُغوي عادةً في عدد كلمات النص فهو معني باكتشاف الأخطاء أكثر من الصياغة، بينما يُغيّر التحرير من عدد كلماته، إذ يغير في الصياغة وتراكيب الجمل ويُعيد البناء.

مفهوم التدقيق اللغوي (Proofreading):

إذا قلنا تدقيق فهذا يذهب بأذهاننا مباشرة إلى التمعن والفحص وإصلاح الأخطاء، وكذلك إذا قلنا لغوي فهذا يعني اللغة بما تحتويه من لفظ وكتابة، ومن هذا المنطلق يمكن استخلاص التعريف الاصطلاحي التالي:

التدقيق اللُّغوي هو عملية مراجعة الأعمال المكتوبة والنصوص بجميع أنواعها ولغتها؛ بهدف ضبط الأخطاء اللغوية والنحوية والإملائية، بالإضافة إلى ضبط تنسيق النص وتعديل الأخطاء المطبعية. ويُعدّ التدقيق اللغوي الخطوة الأخيرة في عملية الكتابة؛ فهو مرحلة أساسية لأي نص سيُشارك مع الجمهور أو سيتم تقديمه للتقييم، سواء كان ورقة بحثية أو رسالة علمية أو كتاب أو سيرة ذاتية أو مقالات وأخبار صحفية أو مطبوعات ترويجية، وغيرها.

ومن خلال هذا التعريف وجدنا أن هذه العملية مرتبطة بالعديد من المحددات، فهي مرتبطة بالأخطاء من حيث اصلاحها، وباللغة من حيث قواعدها وطريقة لفظها وكتابتها بشكل صحيح، وكذلك مرتبطة بمجموعة من المحددات التي تمثل أنواعها وهي الإملاء والنحو والصرف (القواعد والصياغة والمعنى والفكرة وترابط النص).

What is Proofreading?!

Proofreading is the last writing process before the author submits the article for publication or the report/proposal/thesis/dissertation for examination/evaluation. It is the stage of verification, by the author him/herself, or by another person. Thus, it is not only important to check grammar and spelling, it is also highly advised to ensure that the idea of the writer/author is in agreement with what he or she wants to communicate with the audience. In other words, the article/scientific work is clearly written for its intended target audience.

The Importance of Proofreadig

It’s commonplace to feel nervous about submitting your scientific work (a proposal/a report/a manuscript/a thesis/a dissertation). Whether you’re concerned about meeting research reviewers’ high expectations and/or the target journals’ or universities' guidelines. Proofreading is the final stage before a scientific work leaves your hands and enters the expanding universe of appraisal for evaluation/publication. So, it makes sense that you want to deliver a perfectly written document, and avoid embarrassing mistakes.
