🌍 Field Trip to Geologischer Dienst NRW! ⛏️

Last Friday, members of the SPE RWTH Aachen Student Chapter had the opportunity to visit the geothermal research drilling site of Geologischer Dienst NRW in Köln-Dellbrück.

We got a close look at the drilling operations, explored recently recovered drill cores, and learned how subsurface geological data is collected and used to assess the geothermal potential of the region. 🌋🌱

A huge thank you to Kim Nokar and the team on site for the warm welcome, insightful explanations, and an amazing tour!

It was a great experience to see geothermal exploration in action and connect what we learn in theory with real-world fieldwork. 🙌

Geothermal Drilling Site Field Excursion

SPE RWTH Aachen Student Chapter is pleased to invite students to an exclusive visit to the Geologischer Dienst NRW geothermal research drilling site in Cologne-Dellbrück.

The site is part of “Geowärme – Wir erkunden NRW.”, a state-wide initiative led by Geologischer Dienst NRW to investigate the potential of deep geothermal energy in North Rhine-Westphalia. Through scientific drilling, geological core analysis, and subsurface investigations, the project contributes to a better understanding of geothermal resources and supports the region’s long-term energy transition.

During the excursion, participants will gain first-hand insights into drilling operations, geothermal exploration, field safety, and the practical application of geoscience while interacting with professionals working on the project.

🌍 Event Recap | SPE Ambassador Lecturer Program

On 3 July 2026, the SPE RWTH Aachen Student Section was delighted to host the Ambassador Lecturer Program at RWTH Aachen.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Kim Nokar, Geoscientist at Geologischer Dienst NRW and one of the founders of the SPE RWTH Aachen Student Section.

Kim shared her journey from university to industry, offering practical insights into building a career in geoscience. She also introduced the work of Geologischer Dienst NRW, covering topics including geology, groundwater, geothermal energy, raw materials, and geological hazards.

The evening concluded with an engaging networking session, where students had the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and connect with professionals.

A big thank you to Kim Nokar for sharing her experience, Mistura Badru for joining us despite travel delays, and the SPE German Section for making this event possible through their continued support.

See you all our next event! 👋

We are delighted to share that our Geoscience Trivia was successfully held on June 8th at RWTH Aachen University.

The event brought together students from geosciences, engineering, and diverse cultural backgrounds for an evening filled with learning, networking, teamwork, and fun. Through interactive trivia questions, participants had the opportunity to test their knowledge, connect with fellow students, and learn more about the SPE RWTH Aachen University Student Chapter.

Beyond creating a space for academic and social exchange, the trivia event also aimed to identify potential candidates to represent our student chapter in the upcoming PetroBowl competition.

We are truly grateful for the enthusiasm, energy, and participation that made the evening so memorable. Events like this strengthen our student community, encourage collaboration, and promote engagement within the geoscience and energy sectors.

A special thanks to all participants for joining us and making the event so engaging, and to the SPE German Section for making this event possible.

Last Saturday (Dec 20), the SPE RWTH Aachen Chapter enjoyed a memorable social activity in Maastricht 🇳🇱

We arrived around noon and kicked off the day with a relaxed brunch, followed by a city walk through Maastricht’s charming streets, historic churches, and iconic landmarks, including the renowned Dominicanen Bookshop.

In the afternoon, we joined a guided tour of the North Caves Maastricht, exploring the city’s extensive underground system. Stretching over tens of kilometers with thousands of branching intersections, these tunnels were created through centuries of limestone mining, as the stone was widely used as building material that can still be found today in the Maastricht city. Today, the former mining galleries have been carefully preserved and transformed into a unique historical and cultural attraction.

As night fell, we wrapped up the day at the Maastricht Christmas Market, enjoying the festive atmosphere and seasonal spirit together.🎄

Thank you to everyone who joined and helped make this social activity so special.✨
