Head position always seems to be the thing people forget about, particularly when performing hip hinge based exercises (deadlifts, RDLs, good mornings etc).

But what we have to remember is that the spine doesn’t end at the top of your back, it goes up all the way up in to the back of your head!

So when you perform heavy lifts to avoid injury we need to get that head in the right position.
The right position is where it follows the rest of your upper body to maintain that ‘neutral spine’ position throughout!

So this means STOP lifting your head up. I know when there’s a mirror in front of you it’s easy to forget this especially when you want to check out your form, but the head position should be in line with the rest of the body.

🌟 Embracing Failure...

We can be all too quick to just quit something when we fail. I mean after all failure is bad right?

Well failure can be bad. It’s bad if you don’t learn from it to improve on things next time. If you don’t learn and try again how can you ever expect to be better?

When we fail at something and actually learn from it to ensure we don’t fail again we grow so much more than in any other circumstance.

Maybe you’ve started a fitness routine, fallen off plan after a couple of weeks and just stopped completely.
By doing this you’ll never learn and grow.
If you look at why you fell off plan and learn from it so that you don’t fall off plan again you’ll grow and better yourself so much more.

Bottom Line:
Failure isn’t a bad thing. Learn from it and take the necessary steps to ensure you succeed in the end 💪🏼

How often should you change a workout routine?

I am talking specifically about a strength training routine. If you do circuit training or classes etc it’s likely that you are changing what you are doing weekly.

But to see real progress with your weights and strength, how often should you mix it up…

Well to be very vague, it depends! There are a lot of factors to take into account. Are you a beginner? Are you training for something very specific? Are you training around an injury?

For example if you’re a beginner you might spent 10-12 weeks on the same plan really honing in form and technique on the fundamentals.

I want to share my own personal preference. I change my routine every 4-6 weeks as I find this is when my progressive overload might start to plateau and need mixing up.
When I change my programme I don’t make huge changes. It could be adjusting the Reps slightly (again a form of progressive overload), changing a barbell exercise to dumbbells. Maybe adding a variant like the one in the picture.
But I always keep the fundamentals in my plan in some form.

So in reality changing your routine depends on a number of factors. If you’re unsure the best thing to do is ask a trainer who knows 💪🏼
