The Marcus Endowed Chair of Social Justice Film in the School of Cinema will host a showing of the film “Chinatown Rising,” on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Coppola Theater

"Against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-1960s, a young San Francisco Chinatown resident armed with a 16mm camera and leftover film scraps from a local TV station, turned his lens onto his community. Totaling more than 20,000 feet of film (10 hours), Harry Chuck's exquisite unreleased footage has captured a divided community's struggles for self-determination. Chinatown Rising is a documentary film about the Asian American Movement from the perspective of the young residents on the front lines of their historic neighborhood in transition. Through publicly challenging the conservative views of their elders, their demonstrations and protests of the 1960s-1980s rattled the once-quiet streets during the community’s shift in power. Forty-five years later, in intimate interviews, these activists recall their roles and experiences in response to the need for social change. 

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with co-directors/producers Josh Chuck and Harry Chuck.

Josh Chuck, co-director, producer and Harry Chuck, co-director, producer, and director of photography. Harry Chuck earned his MA from the SF State University’s Film Arts Department where he served as a student assistant in film history. His footage for this film was shot as a student/activist and Chinatown Rising is his official return to filmmaking.

Lastly tag your crew and bring them to the Reach Study Circles! It’s an open space staffed by Peer Mentors. Open Monday through Thursdays from 11am to 3pm in Ethnic Studies & Psychology 100. It is a place to build community, collaborate, receive 1 on 1 support for their classes and most importantly to study! Share the post with your friends for a quiet place to study throughout upcoming weeks.

Community? Never heard of her. SFState is a commuter school and it can be hard to build a community after years of distance; RSVP Today! To meet new people, learn about the campus, build your community and learn from other transfer students.

We know it can be difficult adjusting to a new school learning how to navigate the institution, and finding opportunities meeting new people — especially after a global pandemic and years of distance learning.
This event is a space for incoming transfer students to learn more about SFSU Resources and student organizations, build community and meet and learn from other transfer students.

Join us while we sit in our feelings, cry a little (if you need to) and paint it out. Presented by the AA&PI Student Serviced & Black Unity Center, Ft. Latinx Student Center & this activity will be based on the work of Bell Hooks, Self love & Self care.

Mark your calendars! As a commuter school it can be difficult to develop a community that supports your academic, personal and overall well being. We recognize that it can be challenging to find and develop a community that supports our academic and personal well-being. This workshop aims to define and provide examples of community. Connections and networking for us. We’ll talk about social skills and apply them to our lives by building community together. By the end of the this workshop we’ll focus on understanding the importance of building networks so that you have a support system you can lean on.

Happy Black History Month from AA&PI Student Services! We can’t stress enough the importance of honoring the Black community 365 days a year, this upcoming month is certainly no better of a time to keep learning more about Black history, celebrating Black joy, supporting Black creators/educators authentically, and holding yourself accountable to actionable steps in supporting Black liberation today and everyday.

As Asian Americans we might feel as if we have no place in speaking about black history, yet our history says otherwise. Black and Asian communities in the United States have a long history (and beyond) has been intertwined with joy, pain, resistance, and struggle. While our history can be complicated and can be tied to generational trauma, we would like to take an active stance in educating our community about the important solidarity work Asian and Asian Americans communities have done alongside the the Black community.

In AA&PI Student Services, advocating and creating opportunities for access and visibility is a priority for our students.

Our office is located in Village C 141 (next to the US Bank) and are open Monday - Friday from 9-3:30PM and virtually 3:30-5PM.
