When I travel, I don’t just want to see a region — I want to taste it, understand it, and discover what it produces.
It only makes sense: people create with what nature gives them.
In Costa Rica 🇨🇷, the tropical climate and fertile land provide an incredible variety of resources: sugar cane, fruits, grains, and abundant vegetation. So naturally, we find local beers, rum, fruit liqueurs, and other drinks that reflect the land.
A few discoveries that caught my attention:
🌿 Guaro — Costa Rica’s traditional sugar-cane spirit and an important part of the local drinking culture.
🟠 Golden berry liqueur — made from the beautiful golden berry, known locally as uchuva. A delicious example of transforming local fruit into something completely different.
🌴 Vino de Coyol — probably my most fascinating discovery. This traditional fermented drink comes from the sap of the coyol palm. Even more interesting is the local belief surrounding its effects and the tides — a drink with its own stories, traditions, and connection to nature.
🌿 I even discovered locally made bitters, prepared with ingredients from the region — another reminder that what grows around us can become part of a country’s cocktail culture.
This is one of the things I love about travelling: learning, tasting, asking questions and sharing what I discover.
And every time I talk about wine, spirits or cocktails, I like to share the same message:
We should never drink alcohol to lose consciousness. We drink to appreciate, discover and understand what each country and region creates.
Drink less. Taste more. Learn always. Travel more…it is a 🧠
