Mitch King's "The Extra Heartbeat" Football Academy

The Extra Heartbeat Foundation has been a very proud staple in my life for almost a decade. The impact our team has made and the goals that we have been able to reach, have been nothing short of amazing. It has always been my dream and goal to someday, “pass the ball” to another individual that has and shares the same passion and desire for helping their community and the kids within it, as I do.
However, over the past two years I have watched key members of our team grow into amazing roles in their personal/professional lives. Reagan Boeset has accomplished her long time dream of becoming an elementary school principal, Liz King has continued to amaze me with having two wild but amazing little boys, and all the while has worked so hard and has been promoted into the Vice President of Operations at her company. Joe Bowman has become the head football coach at West Burlington High school and the VP of Lending at the bank he works at , just to name a few. With my growing family my passion has not changed but has definitely switched gears. I need and want to be able to spend more time with my boys and family when they need me the most. With that being said, I have decided to put all events and efforts for The Extra Heartbeat Foundation on hold until further notice.

I want to personally thank everyone who has helped me and the foundation over the years. It was truly a TEAM effort and the impact made was due to everyone chipping in and helping. From the bottom of my heart you all have made me a very happy and proud man!

Academy update: We wanted to let everyone know that our highest priority is the safety and well being of the student athletes. Even with the vaccine we still would not be able to supply the staff and support that would allow for the proper amount of oversite and social distancing and still provide the instruction that you all deserve. We are planning on coming back in the summer of 2022 with the best Academy EVER. We wish everyone a fun and safe summer.

We are beyond honored that Charlie and Deb Swink thought of the Extra Heartbeat Foundation and set up a memorial in Charlie’s name. While I didn’t know Charlie personally, from the stories I’ve heard, his personality was infectious and his love of the Hawkeyes ran deep.

All donations to Charlie’s memorial will be put to our annual EHB scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to those that show that little bit of “EXTRA” in all that they do.

There will be 3 scholarships awarded this year - (1) $2,500 and (2) $1,000 scholarships.

To All Athletes and Parents,

I hope everyone is doing well during this unprecedented time.

This is a note that I was not prepared to write and does not come easy for me. With your safety and health being our highest priority, we have come to the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Extra Heartbeat Football Academy.

There are hundreds of hours of planning and organizing that go into this event and in order to give our student athletes the best experience possible, we have decided it’s in everyone’s best interest to wait until 2021 to host our next academy. Please understand this was a very difficult decision for me as this event is one of the highlights of my year.

We will be issuing full refunds and are working with ACTIVE to get those done as quickly as possible. You will be refunded on the same credit card you paid with. If you have any questions, please email Liz at [email protected].

I fully expect there to be football this coming fall and I wish all of you the best of luck in fulfilling your goals and dreams.

Stay healthy and remember there is no substitute for hard work.

Happy New Year! 2020 dates are set and registration is now open!

The 2020 Extra Heartbeat Football Teen Academy and Youth Camp are set for Saturday, July 11 - Sunday, July 12 at the Burlington RecPlex.

We've made a change to the times and cost of the Teen Academy based on athlete's feedback and past year's camps.

>> Saturday's session will not change and will go 9am-4pm, with registration opening at 8:30am.

>> Sunday session will begin at 9am and end at 2pm. We know a lot of the athletes also participate in other sports and camps and have had to leave early in the past.

>> The Teen Academy will now be $125. (Academy has been $150).

We are offering an early bird discount of $25 off until February 22. Use code EARLYBIRD2020. Please share with any and all families and athletes that would be interested!

We hope you all have kicked off the year with EXTRA. Our team loves this time of year because we get to hear/read all about the 'EXTRA' that area athletes have given in their HS careers through the applications to the Mitch King Extra Heartbeat Scholarship! And just like that, another football academy is in the books! THANK YOU to all of the coaches, volunteers, sponsors, and parents for all your help and support this weekend. This camp wouldn’t go on without each of you!

And a huge thanks to all the youth athletes who came out and braved the heat. We hope you had a great time and learned a lot. We will see you next year!!
