Shu Pui Cheung opened first school in 1977 and has settled in the heart of Chinatown in 1983. Cheung's Hung Gar Kung Fu has provided the City of Philadelphia and metropolitan area traditional style of kung fu called Hung Gar. Between hand, hand-to-hand, weapons forms and lion dancing, Cheung's Kung Fu teaches strength, power and honor within a kung fu family. This isn't about "what level belt are you?" or "can your hand chop through wood?" Kung Fu teaches proper stances and correct placement of hands throughout a form. Partners and friendships are created through helping another student or practicing forms together and become a part of a family because of knowing customs. Lion dancing, a part of tradition Chinese culture, and commonly mistaken as "dragon dance," involving a paper mache performed by two people. In tandem, performers are accompanied by drums, cymbals and gong to perform. The Lion Dancing, along with the music, scare away bad luck bringing fortune to businesses, marriages and other ceremonies. "We work hard together and push each other to properly do our forms. We are a team in those lion heads, switching and helping each other when we are tired. Then at the end of the day, we may eat together, securing a bond from the hardship of the day and laugh together over a good meal in Chinatown."

We finally got the Lion and Drums out in Chinatown, for a celebration at the Fire Station. We celebrated the arrival of a new fire Truck. It was great to see everyone.

Years of Lion Dancing showed the teamwork today.

Today was an emotional day. A hot day. Thank you for the help. We hope this is not the School's last days.
