Kent Children's University provides 5 to 14 year olds with exciting, innovative and aspirational lea What is Children’s University™? lecture and workshop.

The Children's University™ (CU) aims to promote exciting learning opportunities and experiences outside normal school hours for children aged 7 to 14 (and 5 and 6 year olds with their families). At the heart of its work is the ambition to raise aspirations, boost achievement and foster a love of learning, so that young people can make the most of their abilities and interests. What is a Learn

ing Destination? Learning Destinations are places and organisations to which children can 'travel' with their Passport To Learning. They provide high quality learning activities and experiences with a 'wow' factor and have passed the Children's University's™ own quality assurance process (Planning for Learning). A Learning Destination can range from a museum to a farm or from an airport to a school. There are Learning Destinations across the country. Recognising and rewarding participation

Children's University™ students use Passports To Learning in which they record the number of hours of completed CU validated learning activities. Children are encouraged to progress through the national certification scheme, based on the number of hours of attendance throughout their involvement with the Children's University™ and Graduate at one of three Kent Universities. Where can my child/ren earn Learning Credits? In Kent and Medway, children can earn Learning Credits in five ways:

1. Through their school's Validated extra-curricular activities (if their school is part of Kent Children's University™)

2. By visiting one of the many hundreds of Learning Destinations across the country. These can be accessed via the National Children's University's website (www.childrensuniversity.co.uk/maps)

3. By taking part in activities with organisations who are Validated Learning Partners. These Learning Partners can be found on the National Children’s University™ website too

4. Through completion of Virtual Credit tasks. These are promoted through the Facebook and Twitter pages as well as the eNewsletters. These activities include Nature Detectives opportunities, KCU Challenges, Reading Challenges and much more!

5. By participating in a CU Live! These sessions are organised by Kent Children's University™ and are open to all children across the country. These activities take place during the school holiday periods. Information about past and future activities can be found through our Social Media channels and eNewsletters

If you would like to download any at-home activities, please do so before 5pm on Monday 30th September as www.kcuchallenges.co.uk will disappear.

This Social Media account will be unpublished on Wednesday 13th November so do use the ideas from here to inspire activities at home.

Some of you will already be aware of this information but it is only now that I am able to share this announcement more widely. I appreciate this will come as a shock for many.

If you are waiting for a reply to emails, Summer Learning Credits and certificates you will receive these before I leave Kent Children's University/The Education People next week.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE EDUCATION PEOPLE: CLOSURE OF KENT CHILDREN'S UNIVERSITY

After nearly 25-years of operating with children, schools and families, a decision by Kent County Council and The Education People has been made to decommission Kent Children’s University (KCU). This means that KCU will cease activity on Thursday 26th September, following which KCU will close.

There are, however, ways that you can carry on your Children’s University journey directly with Children’s University Trust. Children’s University Trust is the national organisation that co-ordinates Children’s University with an array of national partners. They have a number of ways to support you despite the decommissioning of our service locally. You will find details below:

Today is ***dePreventionDay.

World Su***de Prevention Day takes place every year on the 10th September and offers a chance for people to come together to raise awareness of su***de prevention.

The theme for this year is ‘changing the narrative on su***de.’ It aims to inspire everyone to engage in open and honest discussions about su***de and suicidal behaviour.

Su***de has far-reaching consequences, there were more than 6,000 deaths by su***de in England and Wales last year.

Do share these vital numbers with family and friends.

We want to make it easier to talk about difficult feelings, including suicidal thoughts. If we talk more openly about su***de, we can remove the stigma, give people the chance to express how they feel, and get the support they need.

Sharing these helpline details will hopefully help at least one person today.

We were watching live in the office and are so proud of Kent’s Iona Winnifrith! What an amazing achievement for any age, let alone a 13-year-old.

We are sure there will be celebrations in Tonbridge tonight!

🥈 It's silver for Iona! An incredible life-time best for 13-year-old Iona Winnifrith, from Tonbridge, secures a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
