“Once a semester, Rice students get a couple of days off of classes for Midterm Recess (basically, it's a 5-day weekend.) During the Fall semester, Midterm Recess usually lines up with Austin City Limits, a 3-day music festival in Austin, Texas! Austin is a 2.5 hour drive from Houston, and many Rice students attend ACL to see some of the biggest music artists and also explore the city itself. This is a picture of me and my suitemate Christina (this is our fourth year living together) at ACL this year, where we got to see Lizzo, Kacey Musgraves, Tame Impala, and so much more."

“O-Week (Orientation Week) was most definitely one of the craziest weeks of my life. The handpicked advisors each new student had were so inspiring and the entire week was not only informative, but so much fun! I had the opportunity to become friends with a lot of the people at my college (Dunc Love!) and was reassured I belonged at Rice. O-Week was something I had looked forward to my entire Summer before my freshman year, and it definitely surpassed my expectations! ”

“This weekend, my suitemates and I went out to Rice Village to grab some ice cream. It’s a nice place outside of campus to grab some food and shop with your friends. They also had some holiday decorations up around the area!”

“This past Summer, I participated in a program coordinated by the Rice Center for Civic Leadership called Urban Immersion. Because this program was designed for incoming Rice first-years, the people I met there were the first friends I made at Rice. Through UI, I made some of the closest friends I have at different residential colleges! Every week, we have a reunion dinner, and it’s always a good time. This program was such a wonderful welcome to Rice, and I’m so grateful I had the opportunity!”

Residential College Spotlight | McMurtry College
“McMurtry is the 10th residential college to grace the Rice campus. It sits at the perfect location for those seeking the shortest path to the academic quad (where many classes are held), Duncan Hall (for all things engineering), and West Servery (the best servery)!
McMurtry boasts many fantastic accommodations like a campfire pit in the quad, a rooftop patio with a beautiful skyline view, a kitchen on every floor, and a commons (the "Yurt") with floor-to-ceiling windows. Despite being the second-youngest college, we have a thriving culture revolving around our Scottish heritage, a love of bananas, and fantastic MURT spirit!”

Residential College Spotlight | Will Rice College
“Welcome to the College of Gods and Goddesses! Known for our
competitive spirit, Will Rice College is one of the most exciting
residential colleges to be a part of on campus. We are the only
college to have ever swept Beer Bike (meaning we won all three races),
and we have done so not once, not twice, but FIVE times! Our
tight-knit family is incredibly welcoming and always planning a
variety of events that all students can enjoy. Just like the phoenix
that serves as our mascot, Will Ricers always find a way to rise from
the ashes and thrive year after year in all of our endeavors. Will
Rice Will Sweep!”
